A jury has begun deliberations in the manslaughter trial of a former Alexander police officer. The trial for Nancy Cummings, 47, began Thursday in Saline County Circuit Court. The state rested its case earlier today and the defense then rested without calling witnesses.
Cummings is charged in conjunction with the shooting death of Carelton Wallace, 30, of Bryant.

Before Sheriff Cleve Barfield began his official duties on Tuesday, he was already making personnel changes.
Effective Oct. 1, on Barfield's first day in office, the personnel roster no longer included Chief Deputy Bill Field and administrative secretary Mistie Oswalt.
"They were not retained," Barfield said Wednesday in response to inquires.
He has not named a new chief deputy.
"I haven't put anybody in there yet," he said, "but maybe I will in the next few days.
The Salvation Army Central Arkansas Area Command began taking applications for the Christmas Assistance Ministry Program.
Children up to age 12 are eligible to apply for the program.
Parents wishing to apply can turn in application from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. at 129 North Main St.
Applications will be accepted Oct. 1-4.
Parents should bring the following documents:
â€¢picture ID for head of household
â€¢certified birth certificate for all children in the home up to age 12
A significant event is occurring at 5:30 p.m. today when the Benton Advertising and Promotion Commission and the city of Benton host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the Benton Event Center.
In November 2011, the residents of Benton approved a bond issue to finance construction of the center. Construction took 15 months.
The public is encouraged to attend today's ceremony.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the building was held on July 3, 2012. The first event to be held in the facility is a gun and knife show set for Oct. 5 and 6.
