Arkansas unemployment rate up to 7.4 percent

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas' unemployment rate for July was up one-tenth of a percentage point to 7.4 percent.

The Arkansas Department of Workforce Services said Monday that the rate was the same in July 2012, though there are 1,700 fewer unemployed state residents than a year ago.

The national unemployment rate fell by two-tenths of a percentage point to 7.4 percent for July.

The agency says government employment fell by 13,900 jobs and was one of six major industry sectors that showed declines in the number of people working. Four sectors showed gains.

Library to host music therapy program

The Saline County Library will present a music therapy and relaxation program and performance featuring local musician Linda Brockinton and Dr. Terry Harville of UAMS and Arkansas Children’s Hospital at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at Herzfeld Library in Benton and at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Boswell Library in Bryant. The programs are open to all ages on a first-come, first-served basis and will include a mountain dulcimer concert along with information on the benefits of music for relaxation, healing and therapy. Haskell Historical Society to meet Tuesday

The Haskell Historical Society will meet on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Haskell City Hall. 
The program is by Emaline Stroud who will be speaking on the topic of “Murder In Haskell." 
The society is seeking pictures, articles and items from Haskell’s past to be loaned, donated, or copied for display at the museum. Please plan to attend to learn about our community heritage.
