Ark. to submit 'private option' waiver in August

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas Medicaid officials say the state will submit its request to use federal money to purchase private insurance for thousands of low-income residents by August.
Department of Human Services Director John Selig told lawmakers Thursday that the state would draft its waiver next month for the "private option" that lawmakers approved as an alternative to Medicaid expansion. Selig said the state planned to submit the waiver to the federal government in August and hoped to get approval by October.

Fashion for Funds to benefit Safe Haven

Thunderstorms slow Oklahoma tornado cleanup

MOORE, Okla. — A band of thunderstorms battered the Oklahoma City area Thursday, slowing cleanup operations in the suburb where a tornado killed 24 people and destroyed thousands of homes this week.
The first of the funerals, for a 9-year-old girl killed at a Moore elementary school that took a direct hit in Monday's storm, was scheduled for Thursday morning. A family photo showed the girl, Antonia Candelaria, beaming with a big smile and wearing a white sun hat.

Annual Bauxite reunion to include Old-Fashioned Movie Night

The Bauxite Community Hall will show "The Outlaw" and Looney Tunes cartoons on Friday at 7 p.m.
Admission will be 25 cents, and cokes and popcorn will be sold at "vintage prices" as well, according to Randle Wilmoth, coordinator for the Bauxite Reunion.
The Old-Fashioned Movie Night is part of the annual Bauxite Reunion festivities, most of which will take place on Saturday.

Courier accepting 2014 Pet Calendar entries until June 10

The Saline Courier is now accepting entries for the 2014 Pet Calendar contest, a benefit for its Newspapers in Education program.
Sign up for the contest at the Courier office, 321 N. Market St. in Benton, or look for entry forms in select issues of the paper.
Entrants must provide a photo of the pet by itself. The pet must currently reside in Saline County. Each entry is $5.
The top-12 vote-getters will be featured in a 2014 calendar, which will go on sale in November for $2 each.
Each pet will be professionally photographed for the calendar.
The entry period concludes Monday, June 10.

Local authorties participate today in torch run for Special Olympics

Police officers and deputies from the Benton Police Department, Saline County Sheriff’s Office and the Bryant Police Department will participate today in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
The run for the Benton Police Department and Saline County Sheriff's Office will start at Holland Chapel Baptist Church at 1 p.m. and will conclude at Back Yard Burgers on Military Road.
The Bryant Police Department will be conduct a leg of the torch run starting at 2:15 p.m. at the Bryant High School and concluding at Bishop Park on Boone Road.

WEATHER UPDATE: Flash flood watch in effect

A Flash Flood Watch for Saline County remains in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning. Showers and thunderstorms will redevelop over the area today and tonight. Areas of heavy rain will be likely this afternoon through the overnight hours. Rainfall amounts will average between 1 to 2 inches with locally higher amounts in excess of 4 inches possible.
Extremely amounts of moisture combined with several rounds of thunderstorms will allow for excessive rainfall and the potential for high water problems.

2nd arrest made in shooting case: suspect taken in after leaving hospital

The man who last month allegedly shot himself on a stranger's front lawn on Millbrook Cove in Benton was arrested Friday, following his release from a local hospital.
Timothy Gauldin, 29, of Benton has been charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and filing a false police report.
A friend of Gauldin, 35-year-old Jason Gaunt of Benton, allegedly gave him the gun, according to police. He was arrested the day after the shooting and charged with furnishing a felon with a weapon.
