March 1st
A barn fire at the home of Cowboy Church pastor Greg Spann resulted in the complete destruction of the structure Friday afternoon. Spann and his wife, Francis, returned home from lunch to find the barn in flames and completely engulfed. Two horses were in the barn at the time, but escaped after Spann opened the barn door. Neither horse was burned, but Spann called a veterinarian to check the horses for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Units from the Turtle Creek, Haskell and Traskwood fire departments responded to the call.
Cast members of Bauxite High School's spring musical, "Fame Jr.," are ready for the show. Performance times are set for 7 p.m. today and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets at the door are $5 for adults and $3 for students. The audience is encouraged to wear 1980s attire for a chance to win a door prize. An early morning rollover accident on eastbound Interstate 30 near the 116 exit has traffic blocked. A tractor trailer rig rolled over onto its side, blocking all eastbound lanes. A second rig pulling two trailers jackknifed but remained upright. No injuries were reported. Highway Police officials at the scene say it will be several hours before the highway is cleared and urge motorists to find alternate routes.
February 28th
The men’s and women’s high school swim teams from Bryant had a strong showing at the State Championship swim meet on Saturday. The men’s team finished 11th out of 25 teams and the women’s team finished 6th out of 31 teams.
Bryant Planning and Community Development Director Dave Green will present a set of proposed standards for multifamily housing to the City Council during its regular meeting set for 7 p.m. today in the courtroom at City Hall, 210 SW 3rd St.
Because the construction of apartments has been a contentious issue in the city, Bryant Mayor Jill Dabbs and staff attorney Chris Madison have asked that the council only discuss on the proposed rules and delay action until the next meeting to allow time for further review and community input.
February 26th
Two Benton men were arrested by Benton police Saturday for their alleged involvement with a break-in at the Benton Antique Mall.
Shortly after 9 p.m., officers reportedly responded to the business after an alarm activated. Police reported that a K-9 unit observed a man exiting the rear of the building, which is at 18325 Interstate 30.
Officers said they yelled at the man to stop, but the man, later identified as 53-year-old Terry Johnson, continued to flee on foot. K-9 Officer Lucky reportedly gave pursuit and apprehended Johnson.
Saline County Circuit Clerk Dennis Milligan is expected to file paperwork today with the Arkansas Secretary of State's office to form an exploratory committee for the 2014 race for state treasurer, according to Jim Harris, chief of staff for the Circuit Clerk's office.
An exploratory committee allows a potential candidate to raise money that can be used in a race and to determine if there is enough support to officially enter the race.
Former Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Arkansas Highway Commission Chairman R. Madison Murphy of El Dorado are the co-chairmen of Milligan’s committee.
If there could be one word to describe the 18th annual Benton Athletic Memorial Museum Wall of Fame Banquet on Saturday night, it might be "memories."
Athletic Director Steve Quinn, who served as master of ceremonies for the event, pointed out that memories are a key reason for the game itself.
"You play football for the memories," he said, while noting that the 1977 members of the Benton High School championship football team and their family members gathered 35 years later for the the event were reliving that special time in their lives.
Since 2009, the Bryant school system has added 75 students to its English as a Second Language program, and it ia projected that this student population will continue to grow, said Sarah Merayo, ESL coordinator.
Bryant High School has the largest ESL program, with 65 students participating. Springhill Elementary has 55 ESL students.
Among her duties as ELC coordinator, Merayo works as liaison between the families of ESL students and the schools. She often serves as interpreter, but hires bilingual Bryant residents for large projects where an interpreter is needed.
