Clean Water Act opposed by Benton city officials

Benton officials have responded to recent regulations imposed under the Clean Water Act.

Officials referred to action taken April 21 when the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers jointly released a proposed rule to clarify protection under the Clean Water Act for streams and wetlands in the United States.

According to information on an EPA website, "Determining Clean Water Act protection for streams and wetlands became confusing and complex following Supreme Court decisions in 2001 and 2006."

Benton lieutenant first in state to receive prestigious FBI honor

Lt. Mike Treassitti of the Benton Police Department is the 2014 recipient of the Livio A. Beccaccio award from the FBI National Academy Associates in Quantico, Va.

He is the first Arkansan to be selected for the prestigious award.

According to Lt. Kevin Russell, public information officer for the Benton Police Department, "The Livio A. Beccaccio award is a living memorial presented to only one FBI National Academy graduate a year nationwide.

Bond revoked; rape suspect back behind bars

Saline County Circuit Court has revoked the bond of James Gilliam, who was arrested twice in connection for allegedly drugging and raping a juvenile.

Circuit Judge Grisham Phillips revoked Gilliam's bond in a proceeding Friday morning.
Gilliam, 32, had been out on a $100,000 bond.

According to Benton police, the male victim in the case provided information about a suspect, which led investigators to Gilliam.

Gilliam has been charged with rape, introduction of a controlled substance into the body of another person, and trafficking of humans.
