UPDATE: Three vehicle accident on I-30 results in fatality

An early morning accident on Interstate 30 eastbound at the Reynolds Road exit involving three vehicles closed the highway. One individual was evacuated by helicopter and one fatality has been reported. Additional information will be reported as it becomes available.

The burn ban for Saline County that was put into place on Jan. 31 has been lifted, according to County Judge Lanny Fite.

BREAKING NEWS: Bryant man found not guilty in death of 4-month-old daughter

Devin Hunt, 23, of Bryant was found not guilty in the June 2012 killing of his 4-month-old daughter, Presley Faith Hunt, Friday night after a four-day trial in Saline County Circuit Court. The 12-person jury deliberated for 50 minutes before returning with a verdict.
Hunt was arrested and charged with capital murder in September 2012 after an investigation was launched in the case of his daughter's death. The child died from what experts called "abusive head trauma" two days after being taken to the hospital.

BENTON PD: Residential burglary suspect apprehended

The Benton Police Department has released the following statement:
On 1/29/14, at approximately 12:24 PM, Benton officers responded to an address on Fifth Street on report of a residential burglary. Upon making contact with the victim, it was determined that a burglary had occurred and numerous items had been stolen.

Detectives assumed the investigation and a suspect, Thomas Shirley (19 YOA) of Benton, was identified. Based on evidence and information gathered by detectives, Shirley was subsequently taken into custody for this crime without incident.

Man taken to hospital after crashing into tree

Salem volunteer firefighters and Saline County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene of crash on Scott Salem Road in Benton on Wednesday morning. According to Lt. Scott Courtney with the Saline County Sheriff's Office the wreck happened around 6:40 a.m.
A man, who's name has not been released, was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix when he left the roadway and crash viciously into a tree near the entrance of Long Hill housing division.

Benton Middle School featured on "The Biggest Loser" tonight

January 14, 2014

A television crew films students at Benton Middle School in Sept. 2013 as they build a vegetable garden behind their school. Former middle school teacher, Becky Comet, was a contestant on "The Biggest Loser" and returned to the school to help the students learn the importance of exercise and eating right. A segment during the popular TV show will focus on the school, the students and the garden they built will air tonight at 7 p.m.

Bryant finance director resigns unexpectedly

Dennis Edwards, finance director for the city of Bryant, has resigned. In announcing Edwards' departure, Mayor Jill Dabbs said she had not been pleased with the finance department's operation until hiring Edwards and commended his efforts during his brief employment with the city.

Authorities work rollover accident in Bryant Wednesday

Emergency personnel worked a rollover accident eastbound on Arkansas 5 near Hurricane Creek earlier today. The driver was not injured. The wreck was the second rollover accident in as many days.

Some Saline County overpasses open back up

January 8, 2014

After icy roads shutdown overpasses in Saline County this morning, a few have opened back up. The Military Road, Alcoa Road and Congo Road overpasses are now back open and accident free but still slick.
