Baker seeks re-elction to Haskell City Council

Haskell Alderman Halbert E. "Hal" Baker is seeking re-election to the Ward 4, Position 2 seat he holds on the City Council.
An earlier announcement regarding political filings incorrectly indicated Baker was a candidate for another position on the council, but that is not correct.
Also, Juanita Wilson, is seeking the Ward 2, Position 2 seat on the Alexander City Council.
Wilson's name was not included in the most recent listing of candidates.
The Haskell and Alexander city council positions will be determined in the Nov. 6 general election.

Former recorder/treasurer seeks council position

Renee Chastain, a former recorder/treasurer for the city of Bauxite, has announced her candidacy for Position 2 on the Bauxite City Council.
Chastain told The Saline Courier that she is seeking the post because she has a vested interest in Bauxite.
Chastain is challenging incumbent Paula Matthews for the council seat.
"I'd like to see Bauxite grow," she said. "People are on the move and I'd like for Bauxite to be on the coattails on that ride.

Benton police arrest two men for theft

August 18, 2012

Two Little Rock men were arrested by Benton officers on Friday for allegedly breaking into a vehicle.
Lt. Kevin Russell, public information officer for the Benton Police Department, said officers were conducting neighborhood checks when at 2:30 a.m. they noticed two men on Misty Drive in the Hidden Valley Subdivision acting suspicious.

Saline County is fortunate to have a sense of community that pays no attention to city limits or any other arbitrary boundary found on the map. It is this very same sense that doesn't require a natural disaster or catastrophe in order to find neighbor helping neighbor.

Royal Players announce plans for upcoming 'Little Women'

The Royal Players has set auditions for its next production, "Little Women," based on the well-known novel by Louisa May Alcott.
The auditions are scheduled at 7 p.m. on Aug. 26 and 27 at the Royal Theatre, 211 S. Market St. in Benton.
Actors should be prepared to note any scheduling conflicts as there will be a mock schedule available at the auditions. Actors will be asked to read from the script.
Production dates are Oct. 11-14 and 18-21.

A&P selects Fairfield Inn & Suites as events center hotel

Benton Advertising and Promotion Commission has selected Fairfield Inn & Suites as the hotel chain to anchor the development of the events center being built in Hickory Square Shopping Center.
The chain, a Marriott brand, unanimously was approved by members of the commission.
Commission chairman Mark Fikes said three different hotel chains had expressed interest in locating in Benton and each had initiated the paperwork required by the commission for consideration in the project.

Campaign letter still under investigation; leads are few

A campaign letter circulated among Republican voters in Hot Springs Village last May created a controversy regarding the origin of the letter and the individual/individuals responsible its mailing.
The letter, appearing to be written on letterhead from the Myka Bono Sample campaign, contained statements regarding several political campaigns that were ongoing at the time.
Sample, who was challenging incumbent Dennis Milligan for the Saline County Circuit Clerk's position at the time, said she did not write the letter and it did not come from her campaign.

Benton police searching for man wanted on multiple felony charges

The Benton Police Department is requesting help from the public in locating a local man wanted for multiple felony crimes.
Jeremy David Burrow, 36, has a listed address in the 2600 block of Razorback Road in Benton. A warrant has been issued for his arrest for first-degree forgery, fleeing by vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving and driving with a suspended driver’s license.
