Brenda Haney to campaign for Bauxite council

Brenda Haney has joined the contenders seeking a position on the Bauxite City Council.
She is campaigning for Position 3, which will soon be vacated by Alderman Guy Hendrix. Former Alderman Mae Clark also is a candidate for the seat.

Salt bowl tailgate party plans are announced

Benton and Bryant area chamber of commerce members are invited to set up booths for a tailgate party to be held in conjunction with the 2012 Salt Bowl game between the two competing schools.
The Salt Bowl game between Benton and Bryant will be taking place Friday, Sept. 21, at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.  Attendance at this game is traditionally the highest at any high school game in the state, according to a Benton Area Chamber of Commerce spokesperson.

Vendors are asked to register with the Benton Area Chamber of Commerce. 

Fireworks display scheduled Labor Day at old airport site

Area residents who were disappointed that no fireworks displays were presented locally during the Fourth of July holiday can look forward to a special Labor Day event in Benton.
A fireworks extravaganza is planned Sunday, Sept. 2, at the old Saline County Airport site, city officials have announced.
The Independence Day fireworks shows in Saline County were canceled because of drought conditions and fire danger. The county was under a burn ban, as were most counties in the state during the holiday period.

Permenter seeks position on Bryant City Council

Wade Permenter is one of two candidates vying for Position 2 in Ward 1 of the Bryant City Council in the general election Nov. 6. The other is Alan Keys.
"I recently got involved in council meetings and find it interesting to serve the public by hearing people's needs and communicating them to the council," Permenter said.
Permenter cited his values as assets he would bring to the position
"Love of God, love of family, love of community. Each of these is very important to me," Permenter wrote in a press release.

Vigils held at Capitol, courthouse 25 years after Ives, Henry deaths

"He was standing next to his car in the commuter parking lot in Bryant. He had put the T-tops on his car. It's where he was supposed to meet Don. I remember seeing him brushing his hair as I drove past the parking lot."
This was the last time Linda Ives saw her son, Kevin, alive. Don Henry, 16, the son of Curtis Henry, and Kevin, 17, had made plans to spend the night doing some rabbit hunting in the woods of Alexander.

Entergy line raises concerns

A new energy transmission line for Entergy Arkansas will soon be located in Benton; however, a number of area residents have expressed some serious concerns about this type of project.
Benton Utilities' Electric Department has issued a formal news release about a new energy transmission line for Entergy Arkansas being located in the city.
The announcement, issued by Jeff Barnett, manager of the department, is being made primarily for informational purposes to alert Benton Utilities customers to anticipated construction related to the installation of the high-voltage line.

Benton couple arrested for multiple storage building thefts

A married couple from Benton face numerous charges for allegedly breaking into multiple storage buildings throughout Saline County, according to Benton police.
Lt. Kevin Russell said that any individuals renting or owning a storage building in the local area should inspect it to ensure that they also are not a victim of theft. If a unit is found to be burglarized, the individual should call the local police department.
"I would also encourage people to periodically check them just to ensure their property is safe," Russell said.

Homecoming celebration scheduled Sunday at First United Methodist

A homecoming celebration is scheduled this Sunday, Aug. 26, at Benton’s First United Methodist Church.
Three former pastors be preaching for services that day.
The Rev. Don Nolley will preach at the 8 a.m. traditional worship service in the sanctuary; the Rev. John Dill will preach at the 9 a.m. contemporary service in the Christian Life Center; and Dr. Victor Green will preach at the 11 a.m. traditional worship service in the sanctuary.
Special music will be provided by the Sanctuary Choir at the traditional services and by the Praise Team at the contemporary service.

Burn ban lifted for Saline County

The Office of Saline County Judge Lanny Fite confirmed to The Saline Courier today that the county is no longer under a burn ban.
Sheila Doughty, firewire information officer for the Arkansas Forestry Commission, also said that across the state the wildfire danger has been reduced from the extreme level to high level.
"Due to scattered rain and elevated relative humidity values, the wildfire danger has been lowered to the high wildfire danger level," she said. "Open burning is still discouraged as during high wildfire danger fires can escape and containment can be difficult," she said.

Baker seeks re-elction to Haskell City Council

Haskell Alderman Halbert E. "Hal" Baker is seeking re-election to the Ward 4, Position 2 seat he holds on the City Council.
An earlier announcement regarding political filings incorrectly indicated Baker was a candidate for another position on the council, but that is not correct.
Also, Juanita Wilson, is seeking the Ward 2, Position 2 seat on the Alexander City Council.
Wilson's name was not included in the most recent listing of candidates.
The Haskell and Alexander city council positions will be determined in the Nov. 6 general election.
