North Little Rock homes evacuated after spill

September 25, 2014

NORTH LITTLE ROCK — Some North Little Rock families have been forced to evacuate their homes after a hazardous chemical spill in a neighbor's backyard.

Fire Chief Jim Murphy tells KATV-TV the homes were evacuated Wednesday after a homeowner's son accidentally knocked over a 55-gallon barrel of hydrochloric acid. He estimates 20 gallons spilled.
Authorities blocked off the street for several hours to clean up the spill.

The homeowner tells the station the barrel is from a backyard car wash business he used to operate and that the acid is used to clean aluminum rims.

Arkansas woman kills 650-pound alligator

September 25, 2014

LEWISVILLE — An Arkansas woman and her hunting team have killed a 10-foot, 6-inch alligator at a private lake near Lewisville.

The Texarkana Gazette reports Denise Smillie harpooned and fatally shot the 650-pound reptile last week.

Smillie, her husband, son and others went to the lake near the Red River at night. She says it took two harpoons and 45 minutes of struggle to bring the alligator to the surface, where she killed it with a 12-gauge shotgun.

They had to hold the gator in the water as they made their way to shore because it was too big to fit in the boat.
