October 15, 2014

A 17-year-old Saline County girl is fighting a tough battle: She has Hodgkin's lymphoma and is undergoing treatment at St. jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Area residents wanting to help Danielle Lachney and her family as they undergo this experience have scheduled a fundraiser Nov. 15 at the Saline County Moose Lodge 2567 in Benton.

The event will raise funds to help Danielle's family with expenses not covered by her insurance and her long journey through recovery, Moose Lodge spokesperson Angie Norman said.

Past restaurants tell story of Benton's colorful history

October 14, 2014

Eating out in a restaurant is something families have enjoyed for decades in the local area.

Benton's historical accounts include references to many eating establishments that once operated in the city. Among these were the Corner Cupboard Cafe and the Lone Star restaurant, shown in the accompanying photos.

A look back at some of these eateries will be the focus of a PowerPoint presentation Thursday night at a meeting of the Saline County History and Heritage Society.

Steve Perdue, who oversees the local history department of the library, will conduct the presentation.
