Vet receives Quilt of Valor, others recognized

"We were proud to serve the best country in the world," said retired Air Force Master Sgt. Parnell Fisher, a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, at a special veterans tribute on Saturday.

Fisher, who grew up in the Ralph Bunche community, made the comment during a celebration conducted jointly by Saline County 4-H Clubs and the Ralph Bunche Neighborhood Association.

The event included a recognition program at Ralph Bunche Community Center and at the adjacent Woodlawn Cemetery.

Honoring those who 'give their all'

The Vietnam War was in progress when Saline County resident Jerry Ragan enlisted in the Army.
He was 17 and served two tours of duty.

Ragan was one of 11 siblings. In talking about his family, he said, "There was not enough to go around," he said
He dropped out of school as an eighth-grader and went to work in a bakery.

“I knew there was a war going on,” he said, noting that he "stumbled into the recruiter's office in Downtown Benton."

Three days after he and wife Barbara Sue married, he was off to the war.

Glitz and Garland scheduled to entice holiday shoppers

Benton Area Chamber of Commerce and Saline Memorial Health Foundation are partnering again this year to offer area residents a special holiday shopping experience.

The fourth annual Glitz and Garland is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15, at the Benton Event Center.

Matt Brumley, foundation director, reminded residents that only seven shopping weekends remain until Christmas.
He invited residents to plan to finish their shopping early this year and attend this popular event.
