Continuance accepted for Wright, Terry cases

The defense for an admitted Saline County murderer has requested a gag order for media, law enforcement and attorneys and also has filed for a continuance in her case.
Saline County Circuit Judge Gary Arnold decided to review articles from The Saline Courier before making a decision concerning a gag order on the media. Arnold, who has never invoked a gag order for media in the past, said he would announce his decision at a later time.

Rotary Club of Bryant serves the community

The Rotary Club of Bryant is an organization of business and professional leaders who volunteer their time, talents and resources to serve Bryant and the world.
According to Stephen Kincaid, club administrator, the main benefit of joining the Rotary is being able to hep serve the needs of the community. It also provides a networking opportunity.
The Bryant chapter is instrumental in facilitating events such as the Starlight Gala for the Boys and Girls Club and partners with the Bryant School District to coordinate the annual Dash for a Difference 5k fundraiser.

Collins celebrates 100 years

Mae Collins, Bryant resident, celebrated her 100th birthday Jan. 21, with a party attended by more than 100 family members and friends, firemen from the Bryant Fire Department and a news crew from Channel 7 at the Southern Trace Rehabilitation and Care Center.
Collins, born Mae Milam, in Mineral Springs on Jan. 23, 1912, has had a rich life.
She said, "You know what, I asked God, why did he let me live to be 100, and he told me it was none of my business."
Family members traveled from all over the state, Ohio and Kentucky to ring-in Collins' century of life.

Fire scorches approximately 15 acres at Mars Hill Road Sunday afternoon. Homes threatened but not damaged.

Fire departments from Bauxite, Sardis, Shaw and Tull responded to a brush fire near Mars Hill Road south of Bauxite Sunday afternoon. The fire was fanned by high winds that brought the flames within 30 yards of homes in the area. Residents of the area stood and watched while two tanker trucks, two pumper trucks and bulldozers arrived to fight the fire.

BREAKING NEWS: Missing teen is now home

A teen reported missing on Tuesday has returned to her home, authorities said today.
Katelyn North, 17, of Benton is also "safe and unharmed" Lt. Kevin Russell of the Benton Police Department said.
To report missing persons, call the Benton Police Department at 778-1171 or 315-TIPS (8477).
Individuals also may send an anonymous tip to CRIMES (274637) with the keyword BNPD in the body of the text.

Man arrested for allegedly beating baby

As a 3-month-old child is recovering from a broken leg and cracked ribs today at Saline Memorial Hospital, a Benton man is jailed for alleged child abuse.
As of press time, 30-year-old Christopher Williams remains in the Saline County jail on a $50,000 sheriff's bond. According to jail staff, Williams could post bond with $5,000.

The Benton Police Department is asking the public to help located 17-year-old Katelyn North.
She is described as a five-foot, eight-inch tall white female, around 135 pounds, with green eyes and brown hair. Authorities did not have details of what North could be wearing, but believe she is still in the Central Arkansas area.
Anyone with information on Katelyn’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Benton Police Department at 778-1171 or 315-TIPS (8477). Individuals also may send an anonymous tip about his whereabouts to CRIMES (274637) with the keyword BNPD in the body of the text.

Bryant School Board to focus on salary schedules Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. meeting.

Salary schedules for certified and classified employees of the Bryant School District are scheduled for a vote by the Bryant School Board in a Tuesday meeting.
That session will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the district’s Professional Development Center.
The board also plans to vote on the district's technology plan for 2012-14.
Richard Stipe, district business manager, will present the January financial report and a donation report.
