Apartment construction still frozen in Bryant

The Bryant City Council voted during a special meeting at 4 p.m. Friday to extend a hold on the issuance of permits to build multi-family housing in the city limits.
The council had been slated to vote on whether to lift the moratorium, which was put in place in 2011. Alderman Steve Curtis instead moved to vote to extend it.
Although the action might make the city vulnerable to a lawsuit with a current land owner, the council voted unanimously to extend the hold after nearly 20 residents spoke out against the construction of apartments in the area.

Area burn site approved for debris caused by recent storm

State officials have approved a local burn site for debris resulting from the recent winter storm that affected many areas of Saline County.
The site is located behind the county airport off Reynolds Road.
Benton Mayor David Mattingly and County Judge Lanny Fite met to formulate plans for operation of the site.
Mattingly noted that signs will be posted to indicate the location.
The site will be open to the public Monday through Saturday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saline County employees will man the facility.

Officer saves woman, 88, from blaze

Benton Police Officer Chris Goss is credited with saving an 88-year-old woman from a burning structure on Derby Circle.
Bruce Armstrong, fire marshal for the Benton Fire Department, said Goss crawled down a smoke-filled hallway to reach Jessie Mae Flowers, who was in bed in a rear bedroom of the structure at 2908 Derby Circle.
The fire was reported around 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, during a period when many local residences were without electrical power.
Upon entering the structure, Goss "encountered thick, black heavy smoke, which had filled the house," Armstrong said.

Happy New Year, baby!

When Mark William Orr entered the world on Jan. 2, he became a celebrity.
The infant is Saline Memorial Hospital's first baby of 2013.
Mark William is the son of Chad and Krista Orr of Malvern.
According to Rebecca Jones, director of marketing and community relations, he weighed 10 pounds and 2 ounces and was 22 inches long when his birth occurred at 12:46 p.m.
"This is Krista's fourth baby and all have been born at Saline Memorial Hospital," Jones said.
Dr. Kim Smith delivered the child, she added.

'Volunteer to Make Benton Better' theme for Benton Chamber Banquet

The Benton Area Chamber of Commerce has announced plans for the organization's annual banquet.
The banquet is scheduled for Feb. 5, 2013. Tickets may be purchased by contacting the chamber at 501-860-7004. Individuals tickets are $28 and tables for eight are available for $200.
The family life center at Holland Chapel Baptist Church will again serve as the venue for the annual gathering.
Keynote speaker will be Chad Pregracke, the founder of Living Lands & Waters, an organization dedicated to the preservation and cleaning of waterways in the United States.

Cities ponder storm debris cleanup

The Christmas Day storm that dumped from 6 to 10 inches of snow in central Arkansas has left a growing pile of debris in its wake. Fallen trees, limbs and other yard waste have been cleared and accumulated.
Residents have begun to ask if there will be an effort to assist with the removal of the debris. The Saline Courier contacted local mayors for their response.

Electric companies working to restore service in aftermath of winter storm

Thousands of Saline County residents are still without power in wake of the winter storm that hit Tuesday, Christmas Day.
As of press time, estimates on how many customers are out of service or when power will be restored was not available by Benton Utilities.
"The outage is widespread," said Jeremy McAdoo, a representative from Benton Utilities. "We have crews working around the clock. Two separate crews are working 12-hour shifts."

Noel rescued after hit-and-run injury

Noel's future was in doubt.
The victim of a hit-and-run driver, the elderly beagle faced uncertain days because of what was believed to be a broken leg.
After a full examination, one bit of good news emerged. The leg wasn't broken, but damage had been done to the muscles and ligaments. Following a period of rest, veterinarians expected her to be as good as new.
Noel faced a much more serious problem: She was homeless. However, thanks to the giving hearts of many people, she has found refuge with a Saline County couple.

Local man has 'miraculous' recovery after head injury

It's been about six weeks since Morris King fell off the roof of his house and ended up in the intensive care unit at St. Vincent Infirmary Infirmary Medical Center in Little Rock.
The 82-year-old man's fall necessitated brain surgery, and doctors were doubtful that he would recover.
King fell through the acrylic covering over the deck at his home in Haskell and landed on a metal table, which bent under his weight, said his wife, Geraldine.

City offices resume business today

Benton and Bryant city offices will resume business today, although they opened late because of possible issues having to do with the winter storm that hit the county Tuesday.
The Bryant Development Review Committee meeting originally set for today has been rescheduled for next week.
The Bryant City Council has scheduled a special meeting for next week.
There is a community services meeting in Benton scheduled for Jan. 1 at 6 p.m. A civil service commission meeting is scheduled for Jan. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
