Trial set for former firefighter accused of downloading child porn

A 2013 trial date has been set for former Benton firefighter Timothy Ryan Bodkin for allegedly downloading hundreds of images of child pornography to a computer in his home.
Bodkin, 38, was released from the Saline County jail on Aug. 31, after a family member paid a $200,000 sheriff's bond. He is facing a thousand counts of felony possession of child pornography.
Attorneys for Bodkin appeared before Saline County Judge Bobby McCallister on Monday, and a two-day jury trial for Bodkin was set for Feb. 26 and 27.

No charges for Tripp; identity of bloggers remains confidential

The Saline County Prosecuting Attorney's office has completed an investigation into alleged perjury committed by Benton resident Ricky David Tripp during testimony Tripp gave in a Saline County Circuit Court proceeding in which Circuit Judge Gary Arnold presided.
Tripp was called to testify on July 12, 2012, in a proceeding stemming from a lawsuit filed by Bryant Aldermen Adrian Henley, Brenda Miller and Danny Steele. The three claim they have been slandered and defamed by anonymous bloggers on the social website MySaline.com.

Teacher charged with sexual assault posts bail; court date set

A former Bryant teacher posted bail shortly after she surrendered voluntarily at the Saline County Detention Center on Wednesday morning, authorities say.
Courtney Speer, 31, has been charged with six counts of sexual assault of a minor: four counts in Bryant and two counts in Benton.
Lt. Don Birdsong of the Saline County Detention Center said Speer was released after posting bond. Bail was set at $20,000 and the court date is slated for Nov. 13.

3 charged with attempted capital murder

Three Saline County men were arrested after they allegedly broke into a home and shot a man.
Lt. Kevin Russell, public information officer for the Benton Police Department, said this was not a random act of violence.
"There was a history of ongoing personal conflicts between all of the suspects and the victim, but nothing violent until this incident," he explained.

Longhills closes; owners hopeful facility can reopen through new management

A Benton institution closed at the end of the day Sunday.
Longhills Golf Course owners Bud and Mary Jean Busken and Jeff and Sam Hamm are ending their oversight of the operation that has served the community for more than a half-century.
The owners have been trying to sell the property for some time to Lindsey Management Co., which has wanted to build an upscale apartment complex at the site while continuing to operate the golf course with its swimming pool, tennis courts and other amenities.

Recently resigned high school teacher to be charged with sexual assault

A former Bryant teacher is suspected of sexual assault of a minor.
Courtney Speer, 31, allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old Bryant High School student, according to Benton police. Speer resigned Monday from her position as 9th grade English teacher at Bryant High School.
The case is a joint investigation with the Benton and Bryant Police Departments, because incidents occurred in both jurisdictions, on school property and at Speer's Benton home.
At the time of the alleged incidents, Speer was employed as a teacher at Bryant High School.

Knight resigns as chairman of Saline Republican Committee

Shane Knight has resigned as chairman of the Saline County Republican Committee.
Rumors of his resignation had been circulating around Saline County for the past week and Knight posted on his Facebook page Sunday that he had made a political move.
Steve McDaniel, second vice chairman of the committee, confirmed Knight's resignation Sunday night. McDaniel did not state the reason for Knight's resignation, but added "the Republican Party will carry on and Shane isn't the first chairman to have to resign because of personal conflicts."

Bryant teacher named 'Hero of Hope'

Nov. 5, 2010, began as any other day for 36-year-old Sherri Cathey, a teacher at Bethel Middle School. Staff and students were out of school that fall day and, like most teachers, Cathey  mother to four daughters - was trying to squeeze in all of those necessary doctor and dentist appointments.  She never made it to the dentist. Within minutes of seeing her doctor for pain under her arms, it was determined she had swollen lymph nodes.  The doctor ordered Cathey to go directly to Baptist Breast Center and to call her husband, Mike, to meet her there.

Alexander council called a special meeting late Friday

The Alexander City Council called a special meeting late Friday and discussed at length about three items, but one item was tabled and another was dropped.
Mayor Paul Mitchell informed the council that Saline County District Judge Curtis Rickard requested the council to vote on a resolution that would authorize him to hire a court clerk. Rickard also requested the council set the salary for the court clerk position, which Mitchell said had been advertised recently at $9 an hour.

Car wash to benefit Bauxite Volunteer Fire Department

A car wash fundraiser will be held Saturday at the J.T. Peterson Volunteer Fire Department in Bauxite.
The event will begin at 7 a.m. on the parking lot, located next to Bauxite City Hall on Arkansas 183. The public is invited and firefighters will be among the volunteers washing the vehicles. Donations are accepted.
The money raised will be used for the purchase of lifesaving equipment and training for Bauxite firefighters.
