Recycling bin issue draws small crowd at public meeting

The first of three public meetings to gather information regarding the future of recycling bins in Saline County took place Monday night. Thirteen people attended the meeting held at the Office of Emergency Management meeting in Benton. Of the 13, five were residents, two were waste haulers and the remaining six were members of the Saline County Regional Solid Waste Management District Board of Directors or employees of the district.

Man charged with raping 2 juveniles

A Benton man has been arrested for allegedly raping two juveniles at his residence Monday morning.

Manuel Portillo, 51, has been charged with three counts of rape.

One incident was reported shortly after midnight Monday.

During the investigation, officers reported finding evidence that the assaults had occurred and that another victim may have been involved, said Lt. Kevin Russell, Benton Police Department spokesperson.

The two victims and Portillo were acquainted prior to the incident, Russell said.

Saline County Sheriff’s Office
•A man on Oak Place Drive reported a theft.
•A man on East Polk Road reported a man threatened him.
•A woman on Samples Road reported she witnessed a disturbance.
•A man on Germania Road reported a motorcycle was stolen.

Benton Fire Department
Benton firefighters responded to a brush fire, a rescue call, three medical calls and a motor vehicle accident.

Early voting continuing at 4 Saline County sites

A total of 9,086 ballots have been cast in the six days since early voting started Oct. 20 in the November general election.

Broken down by specific sites, the Saline County Clerk's Office reported that 4,302 people have voted to date at the county election center ("vote here" building) in Benton; 2,500 at Grace Church in Bryant; 1,530 at Bank of the Ozarks (formerly Summit Bank) in Hot Springs Village; and 1,632 at the East End Fire Station.
