Benton council meeting canceled

February 20, 2015

Citing a lack of things to talk about, this month’s Benton City Council meeting has been canceled.

Originally slated for Monday evening, the meeting was called off “due to a lack of items for the agenda,” Mayor David Mattingly’s office said in a memo Thursday.

The next city-related meeting will be held by the Finance Committee on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 5:45 p.m. in the mayor’s Conference Room. Included on that agenda is discussion on funding for Citizens Drive, the entrance to Riverside Park.

Three snow days remain on Benton school's calendar

February 20, 2015

Students in the Benton School District will be going to class a couple days later than school officials originally intended.

Icy road conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday forced the district to cancel classes, and those two days will be made up on the last week of school, according to Mary Morgan, assistant superintendent for human resources and administrative services.

Barring future winter storms this school year, the district’s last day of school will be Friday, May 29.

Everett Buick GMC honored fifth straight year for sales

February 20, 2015

Everett Buick GMC was lauded for amassing the top new vehicle sales in the nation at a banquet Thursday night at the Benton Event Center.

That in itself is a stupendous honor, Everett’s co-owners Dwight and Susie Everett acknowledge.

But there is more to the honor. This isn’t a singular accomplishment for the Bryant dealership — it’s the fifth consecutive year that the company’s sales have been tops in the entire country.

“To do this for one year is great,” Dwight Everett said. “For it to happen five times in a row is amazing.”
