Flu or fluke? Harmony Grove High reports 36 percent absenteeism

February 13, 2015

HASKELL — With 36 percent of its students missing class this week, Harmony Grove High School is operating “as normal as possible,” Superintendent Daniel Henley said.

Of the 360 high school students, 130 were absent on Wednesday. In addition to the absent students, Henley said six of the high school’s 30 or so teachers have been home since the absenteeism spike started Tuesday.
Influenza is partly to blame.

“Some of it probably is flu,” Henley said. “I’m sure some [students] went to the doctor and some of them didn’t. Some of them were showing flu-like symptoms.”
