Child hurt after fall into LR Zoo's jaguar exhibit

October 10, 2014

LITTLE ROCK — Little Rock Zoo officials say a young child is recovering after falling into a jaguar exhibit.

Zoo spokeswoman Susan Altrui says staff members used a fire extinguisher to keep the jaguars from approaching the toddler after the incident Friday morning. The child was pulled to safety by a zoo employee who'd lowered a ladder into the exhibit.

Altrui says the child was conscious and responding at the time and was taken to a nearby hospital. Officials have not yet released the child's age or said how the toddler fell into the exhibit.

A-F rating system approved for Arkansas schools

October 10, 2014

LITTLE ROCK — Most Arkansas public schools will soon be graded in much the same way students are graded.

On Thursday, the Arkansas Board of Education approved a new A through F rating system that will replace the older practice of rating schools on a 1-5 scale. Schools won't be penalized or rewarded based on their results. Grades won't be applied to alternative learning education centers.

The media reports a 2013 law required the letter grades, which are meant to be easier for parents to understand.
