Raymond J. Smith, 80, of Benton passed away Saturday, April 14, in Bryant.Â He was born March 30, 1932 in New York City, New York to the late Raymond Smith and Mary Costigan Smith.Â He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War.Â Â Later he retired as a mechanical engineer for AT&T.Â
Mrs. Annie Chilton, 91, of Benton, went to be with the Lord on Sunday April 15. She was born March 30, 1921 in Pilot Mountain, North Carolina. Annie worked for 10 years at Daleâ€™s Donuts and was owner of DeAnns Sandwich Shop and Papaloâ€™s Pizza from 1961 â€“ 1972. Annie was a Methodist. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years Dean Chilton, mother Estelle Jones and step-father, Joseph W. Jones, father, Luther Solomon Welch, two sisters, Alice Lipsulept and Mary Elizabeth Welch and daughter, Elizabeth Francile Melton.
Thomas E. Smith Jr., 82, of Benton passed away Wednesday, April 11.Â He was born Sept. 4, 1929, in North Little Rock to the late Thomas E. Smith Sr. and Ruby Valentine Smith.Â
Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.Â The Saline Courier published several stories honoring Smith's service to his country. He was a certified registered nurse anesthetist and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Smith; a sister, Betty Brewer; and a stepson, Hollis Van Hopkins.
Linda Carol Berry Dempsey, 71 of Benton passed away on April 9, with her granddaughter, Halana by her side. She was born on April 1, 1941 to the late, Virgil and Georgia McCutcheon in Benton. Linda was a member of New Life Missionary Baptist church for over 15 years. She enjoyed fishing, traveling, shopping, collecting and working in her flower garden. Linda retired from Benton Service Center after 27 years as a LPTN. Her most precious times were spent with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth Dempsey; one sister and one brother.
Elaine Banks, 64, of Benton went to be with the Lord on April 12, 2012 with her family by her side.
Mrs. Banks was a Christian and loved the Lord and her family with all her heart.
She was born on February 6, 1948 to the late, Dall and Phasteen Wilson in Benton.
Elaine fought a brave battle against surgery complications. She enjoyed shopping, fishing and working in her flower garden. Her most precious time was spent spoiling her grandbabies. Elaine never met a stranger and always was willing to help anyone in need.
Elsie Stricklin, 78, of Little Rock, passed away Wednesday, April 11.Â She was born April 19, 1933 in Little Rock.Â Mrs. Stricklin was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal Faith.Â She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Allie Gilbert; son, James Stricklin; two brothers, Otis and A.J. Gilbert and a sister, Nancy Gilbert.
Carolyn Sue Smart, 66 of Benton passed away on April 10.Â
She was born March 30, 1946, to the late Tracy and Maxine Brady in Jonesboro.Â Carolyn enjoyed embroidering, reading, camping, fishing and spending time with her family.Â She was a member of Collegeville Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Randy; a grandson, Kevin Gregory Norris; and her uncle, Johnny.
Tillar Marie Williams of Benton departed this life on April 8. She was born Aug. 30, 1947 in Bauxite to the late Watson,Sr., and Constance Madison.
She attended the last graduating class of the Ralph Bunche School in Benton.Â She also attended Shorter College in North Little Rock. Tillar was united in holy matrimony to Raymond Charles Williams Sr.Â To this union, a daughter and son were born.
She was employed at the Alexander Human Development Center for 31 dedicated years as a rehabilitationÂ instructor.
Her passions in life were books, Folgers coffee and Walmart.
Donal G. Applegate, 79, went to be with our Lord, April 10, after four years of fighting valiantly against esophageal cancer. He married his surviving wife, Claude Sutton's daughter, Marilyn, almost 57 years ago in Bauxite.
He has a beloved daughter, Jill Applegate Warbington (Danny) who considers him the "best daddy in the whole world," and the most special granddaughter, Abbey Warbington, who loves her Papo "up to the sky and down to the ground."
All of his nieces and nephews were precious to him. He "adopted" many non-relatives that will miss his warm love and care as well.
Mary Elizabeth Griffin, 82, of Benton, passed away Monday, April 9.Â She was born Sept. 19, 1929, in Bauxite to the late Clifton and Pearl Bevels Crawford.Â Mary was a member of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ben Edgar Griffin of Benton; a sister, Marie Harding of Benton; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today, April 11, at Ashby Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Wright officiating.Â Burial will follow at Sharon Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled today from 1 to 2 p.m. preceding the service.
