The Harmony Grove Cardinals basketball teams kicked off their portion of the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament in Haskell last night against the Woodlawn Bears and Lady Bears. With the girls looking to move their record to 3-1 on the year and the boys looking for their first win, Harmony Grove stormed through round one of the tournament, sweeping Woodlawn with back-to-back wins. The Lady Cardinals won 49-30 while the boys made it out with a 50-39 showing.
Every high school basketball and football team has a rival. Every team has the school that they absolutely dislike because “hate” is too harsh. But, one thing most schools do not have is a rival that is less than 10 miles away. This can only be said about Benton and Bryant.
Year in and year out, both schools bring huge crowds during the basketball and football seasons. Known for the famous “Salt Bowl” at War Memorial Stadium to open the football season every year, both schools have been known to get pretty heated, both on the court and in the stands.
The Bauxite Lady Miners dropped their final game of the Alumni Girls Classic 61-51 to the Little Rock Central Lady Tigers on Saturday at Little Rock Hall High School.
Bauxite went 1-2 in the tournament, defeating Lonoke 60-41 in the first round and losing to Little Rock Parkview 69-36 in the second round. Parkview won the tournament when they beat North Little Rock 45-37 in the final.
Parkview went to the 6A State Championship last year and Central lost in the first round of the 7A playoffs last year, so the Lady Miners (2-2) had some tough competition to begin the year.
