BENTON â After spending the weekend in Shreveport, La. where the weather was in the mid 90s and sunny, the Benton Lady Panthers were a little âshell-shockedâ Tuesday when they had to play in the rain and the mid 50-degree temperatures at the Benton Panther Softball Complex.
Although it took some time for their bats to warm up, the Lady Panthers defeated Texarkana 6-0 thanks in part to a three-run inning in the fifth.
Both the Bauxite baseball and softball teams are off to a 1-0 start in 4A-7 Conference play after beating Oak Grove Monday.
The Miners (8-5, 1-0) won 12-3 in seven innings behind solid pitching from junior Ryan Weng, who had a complete game with only 79 pitches.
Bauxite baseball head coach Michael Mattox said, âHe worked very efficiently. It didnât seem like he had complete command, but heâs such a competitor that even on his off days heâs effective.â
Weng gave up five hits and three runs, two of which were earned. He recorded three strikeouts with three walks.
After defeating Mena 4-3 on Saturday, the Sheridan Yellowjackets will try to maintain their winning streak when they face El Dorado tonight.
âThat is a big conference game for us,â Sheridan coach Mike Moore said. âThey have a really good pitcher. It is going to be a tough game for us.â
The âJackets are currently riding a 11-game winning streak and are 2-0 in the 6A South conference.
Sheridan scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead over Mena last Saturday.
