February 15th
LITTLE ROCK â The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals came into Tuesday nightâs opening round of the 5-3A South District Tournament in control of their own fate. There was only one problem standing in their way and that was the Lady Eagles from Cutter Morning Star, a team Harmony Grove narrowly escaped with a win on the road just a few days ago.
LITTLE ROCK â The Glen Rose Beavers came into the first round of the 5-3A District Tournament at Episcopal (Little Rock) with nothing to lose and everything to gain as they tried to play spoiler and keep their season alive. But, there would be no fireworks on the Glen Rose side as Fountain Lake narrowly got past the Beavers 44-42.
February 9th
LITTLE ROCK â The Bryant Lady Hornets swim team finished in second place at the Central Arkansas Invitational swim and dive meet this past Saturday. The Lady Hornets scored 267 points behind Conway High Schoolâs 535 points. The Bryant boys finished in sixth place with a total of 158, the Benton Panthers finished in 13th place (29.5) and the Lady Panthers came in 12th with 41 points.
HASKELL - The Harmony Grove Cardinals have seen their fair share of ups and downs this season. But when it come to beating a rival like Glen Rose, it is all ups for the moment. Earlier in the season, the Cardinals dominated the Beavers on the road, winning huge 60-36. At the time, that was the Cardinalsâ second win of the season.
February 8th
PEARCY â The Benton Lady Panthers are probably forgetting what losing feels like. The Lady Panthers won their 12th consecutive game and improved to 10-0 in the 6A South conference with a 52-25 victory of the Lake Hamilton Lady Wolves on Tuesday night. And again, defense has been the force behind Bentonâs success.
âWe were playing just stellar defense,â Benton Coach Jerry Chumley said. âThey had four field and three free throws [in the first half]. We couldnât ask for any more defensively. The second half, it just kind of continued.â
BRYANT â The Bryant Lady Hornets fell to the Van Buren Lady Pointers 58-54 on Tuesday night in 7A/6A Central conference action in Bryant.
âVan Buren is a good team,â Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. âThey were well-prepared. They did stuff to us defensively that we havenât seen all year.â
âWe never really got into a flow offensively, but our kids continued to compete. We didnât play very well, but such is life in the 7A Central and we got beat. They have four or five kids that they can put on the floor that can score.â
BRYANT â Three Bryant football players signed college letters of intent Wednesday on National Signing Day, but delayed their party until Friday.
âThese guys are smart,â Bryant coach Paul Calley said. âThey came to me and asked if they could have their party on Friday, so all of the media would come out.â
Receiver/defensive back Dillion Winfrey signed with Central Arkansas, linebacker Marshall Everett inked with Arkansas-Monticello and running back Karon Dismuke signed with Southern Arkansas.
February 2nd
BRYANT â Bryant Lady Hornetsâ senior distance runner Ashlyn Lessenberry had a decent idea where she wanted to go to college when she found out where her best friend was going to play softball. Lessenberry is following her friend, Kayla Sory, to Henderson State University as she signed a letter of intent to run for the Lady Reddies in the Bryant Gym on Wednesday morning.
BAUXITE â Bauxite Minersâ senior lineman Matt Steele signed with the Southern Arkansas University Muleriders out of Magnolia, Ark., on Wednesday morning in the Bauxite High School auditorium.
âI think itâs awesome,â Bauxite Coach Shane Clancy said. âItâs something heâs talked about doing since the eighth grade.
LITTLE ROCK â It wasnât pretty, but the Bauxite Lady Miners came away with a 42-32 victory over the Robinson Lady Senators on Tuesday night in Little Rock in 7-4A conference play.
âComing in, they didnât have a conference win, but they played everybody really tough,â Bauxite Coach Josh Harrison said of the Lady Senators. âThey didnât really have anything to lose. They were just as physical and aggressive as they could possibly be.â
