I was looking at old-school baseball cards one day online and as the St. Louis Cardinals are saved in my searches, I came across some cards of a former Cardinal I had never heard about. And being a huge Cardinal and history fan (I used to be a history major), I was a little disappointed in myself that I didn't know who Dick Hughes was and how huge he was for the Cardinals 1967 world series team, which St. Louis won over the Boston Red Sox in seven games. That and the fact Hughes was born in Stephens, Ark.
November 21, 2012. I remember it like yesterday. I arrived at work earlier than normal to get the paper finished due to the Thanksgiving holiday. I came in, checked my email, greeted everyone that arrived after me and then the boss walked out.
"There was a bad car wreck last night on Spring Hill," he said. Curious like always I said "what happened?" "I'm not really sure," he said, "but a Benton teenager was killed."
My heart sank.
BENTON – The 31st Tournament of Champions comes begins on Friday, May 24, to Sunday, May 26. It is the largest Tournament of Champions ever with a record 179 baseball teams entered this year. There are three legs to the tournament (Everett Triple Crown) played in March, April and early May, and then the TOC will be on Friday.
BRYANT – After going a combined 85-8 for a .914 winning percentage its previous three state championship-winning seasons, the Bryant Lady Hornet softball team had a bit of a setback this past year not making it to the playoffs for the first time in Coach Debbie Clark’s career. Bryant lost five more games in 2013, going 13-13 and 8-6 in the 7A/6A South conference, than it had the previous three seasons combined.
FAYETTEVILLE - There has always been a winning tradition when it comes to the Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals softball program. Winner of three state titles since the millennium, the Lady Cardinals have been geared back up and loaded to win a few more coming into the 2013 season.
FAYETTEVILLE - The 2013 season has been like none other for the Benton Lady Panthers. After losing a 2-1 heartbreaker in the state semifinals in 2012 to Russellville, Benton was forced to regroup and start working on another run this season. After tragedy struck in November when Lady Panther Drew Melton died in a car accident, the Lady Panthers had a long road ahead once again.
BENTON - Benton High School has become accustomed to having athletes play and succeed at the next level. While not everyone moves on to reach “Cliff Lee” status, the ones that play at the NCAA level usually make the most of it.
As for the 2013 Benton Panther basketball team, the “next level” will be chalked full of talent and former Panthers; one being 6-foot, 9-inch big man Graham Gardner who signed to play with College of the Ozarks in Branson, Mo., on Tuesday.
HASKELL - The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals have been the hottest team in Saline County all season. Now sitting at 30-2 overall on the year, Harmony Grove is looking for its fourth 3A State Championship since winning three in a row from 2002-04.
While many tournament roads are not easy to travel, the Lady Cardinals have made easy work of their opponent in tournament play, winning three straight before entering the 2013 State Tournament recently. Harmony Grove won the Woodlawn, 3A District and Region 2 Regional tournaments in three straight weekends and now has a chance at more heroics.
BENTON – The Benton Panthers had a historic year this past season, winning a school-record 27 games opposed to just three losses, and losing in the semifinals of the 6A State Tournament. But the Panthers wouldn’t have had their historic year, which included an undefeated 14-0 South Conference schedule, without two players who are trading in their paws for a different species.
