April 17th
JESSIEVILLE – The Benton Harmony Grove Cardinals improved to 4-2 in the 5-3A conference with a 9-1 win over the Jessieville Lions on Friday.
Tyler Hamilton started for the Cardinals and struck out 13 Lions in the win, giving up one run on five hits in seven innings. He walked just one.
BENTON – Bryant Hornet senior Nate Rutherford didn’t allow a Benton Panther past first base until the final inning in a 6-1 Bryant win over Benton in 7A/6A South conference action on Friday at Panther Field. The Hornets returned the favor to the Panthers as Benton defeated Bryant in the first matchup 1-0.
BRYANT – The Benton Panthers did something to the Bryant Hornets they haven’t done in 10 years. The Panthers beat the Hornets 2-1 on Friday in Bryant, which was the first victory for the Panthers over the Hornets (13-2-1, 7-1 South) since 2004.
“It was a huge win,” Benton Coach Bobby Winn said. “Our seniors led the way with the game plan and everybody that played, played with every ounce of energy in their heart and pulled off a great victory they’ve been trying to get for years.”
April 11th
PINE BLUFF – It didn’t look like it would be a blowout early in the game, but the Benton Panthers defeated the Pine Bluff Zebras 14-1 in six innings in 7A/6A South conference action on Tuesday at Taylor Field in Pine Bluff. The win places the Panthers 6-0 in the South and 12-2 overall.
BENTON - The Benton Lady Panthers have been on a tear of late, winning six of their last seven, all coming against 7A/6A South foes. On Monday, Benton traveled to Pearcy to take on the Lady Wolves of Lake Hamilton in a makeup game. With hot bats smoking for Benton, Lake Hamilton’s gloves were rather shaky as Benton romped out to a quick 9-0 lead before winning 10-1.
Stevi Berg led the game off by reaching on an error and later scored on another error, this time with Ashton Currey at the dish. Daphne Bono also scored after following Berg with a single.
BAUXITE - The Bauxite Miners jumped ahead early, but ultimately fell 11-3 to the Arkansas Baptist Eagles in 7-4A action on Monday. The Miners drop to 6-8 (1-4) with the loss.
“We started out good but just didn’t put them away when we needed to,” Bauxite Coach Michael Mattox said. “We left seven runners on base through the first three innings. With one hit, we could have blown it open, but we couldn’t get it.”
HASKELL - The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals have become accustomed to winning games early and with ease, outscoring their opponents 40-0 over the past three games entering Monday’s contest. With Perryville coming to town, Harmony Grove found itself in a dog fight early.
But thanks once again to a powerful bat and even better arm, Kristen Dempsey and the Lady Cardinals came away with their 13th straight win, this one a 4-3 victory.
April 3rd
PEARCY – In nasty weather at Lake Hamilton High School, the Benton Panthers soccer team came away with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Wolves in 7A/6A South conference play on Tuesday night.
“We played very hard in adverse conditions,” Benton Coach Bobby Winn said. “Weather was rainy and in the 30’s.”
The Panthers (5-1-1, 4-1 South) Â gave up three goals in the first half, but stuck to the game plan in the second half to come back.
TEXARKANA – The Bryant Hornets were the recipients of 13 walks and five errors in an 11-1 win over the Texarkana Razorbacks in 7A/6A South conference play on Tuesday in Texarkana. With the 13 walks, the Hornets banged out 13 hits as well.
“They helped us out,” Bryant Coach Kirk Bock said of Texarkana. “They walked 13 of us and they booted five balls. They helped us out a lot.”
Every player in the Hornets’ lineup had at least one hit, with four players getting two hits.
March 29th
SHERIDAN – Senior Benton Panther left-hander Coulton Lee gave up one hit and struck out 13 Sheridan Yellowjackets in a complete-game 5-0 win in 7A/6A South conference play on Tuesday night in Sheridan. In 28.2 innings this season, Lee (5-0) has yet to give up a run this season. He has given up just 10 hits over that span and struck out 46 for an 11.2 strikeout per 7-inning ratio.
