Lady Hornet signs letter of intent

Bryant senior Abbi Stearns signed a letter of intent Thursday to attend and play basketball for Central Baptist College in Conway.

Stearns has been a member of the Bryant varsity team for the past three years and started the past two. She said playing for the Lady Hornets has been a “real experience.”

Last week, Stearns was named to the 2011 7A Central All-Conference Team, which she also made last year as a junior. As this year’s lone senior, she led the Lady Hornets in rebounds, averaging eight per game. She led the team in rebounds as a junior, too.

Cardinals defeat Cutter Tuesday

The Harmony Grove Cardinals scored three runs in the first, one in the second, six in the third and two in the fourth to defeat Cutter Morning Star 12-2 in five innings Tuesday afternoon.

Rex Furry pitched a one-hit shutout until the top of the fifth when he gave up a two-run single after walking two with one out. Furry finished the game allowing two runs on two hits with two walks.

He struck out 10.

“This conference is pretty tough and nothing is given,” coach Brandon Kelly said. “Last night we played a complete game. It always feels good to get a win.”

Lady Hornets romp Russellville 10-0

The Lady Hornets got off to a slow start Tuesday, but Russellville never got anything started.

After being held scoreless in four innings, Bryant scored six runs in the fifth inning and four in the seventh to beat the Lady Cyclones 10-0.

Head coach Debbie Clark said, “Sometimes it just takes the players an inning or two to figuyre otua the pitcher.”

Bryant (11-3, 2-0 7A Central) faces Conway today at home at 5 p.m.

Four of the Lady Hornets runs in the fifth inning came off a grand slam by Jessie Taylor, bringing in herself, Katie Stillman, Jenna Bruick and Hannah Rice.
