HASKELL - The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals have become accustomed to winning games early and with ease, outscoring their opponents 40-0 over the past three games entering Mondayâ€™s contest. With Perryville coming to town, Harmony Grove found itself in a dog fight early.
But thanks once again to a powerful bat and even better arm, Kristen Dempsey and the Lady Cardinals came away with their 13th straight win, this one a 4-3 victory.
PEARCY â€“ In nasty weather at Lake Hamilton High School, the Benton Panthers soccer team came away with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Wolves in 7A/6A South conference play on Tuesday night.
â€śWe played very hard in adverse conditions,â€ť Benton Coach Bobby Winn said. â€śWeather was rainy and in the 30â€™s.â€ť
The Panthers (5-1-1, 4-1 South) Â gave up three goals in the first half, but stuck to the game plan in the second half to come back.
TEXARKANA â€“ The Bryant Hornets were the recipients of 13 walks and five errors in an 11-1 win over the Texarkana Razorbacks in 7A/6A South conference play on Tuesday in Texarkana. With the 13 walks, the Hornets banged out 13 hits as well.
â€śThey helped us out,â€ť Bryant Coach Kirk Bock said of Texarkana. â€śThey walked 13 of us and they booted five balls. They helped us out a lot.â€ť
Every player in the Hornetsâ€™ lineup had at least one hit, with four players getting two hits.
SHERIDAN â€“ Senior Benton Panther left-hander Coulton Lee gave up one hit and struck out 13 Sheridan Yellowjackets in a complete-game 5-0 win in 7A/6A South conference play on Tuesday night in Sheridan. In 28.2 innings this season, Lee (5-0) has yet to give up a run this season. He has given up just 10 hits over that span and struck out 46 for an 11.2 strikeout per 7-inning ratio.
TAMPA, Fla. â€“ After splitting their first two tournament games in the Tampa Bay Spring Training Tournament on Monday, the Bryant Hornets defeated Poly Prep (NY) 4-0 and Lutheran South (Mo.) 14-7 on Tuesday. The Hornets will play four more games, two on Thursday and two on Friday, in Tampa before heading back to Bryant.
In their first game on Tuesday, the Hornets (9-5) received a three-hit, complete-game shutout from sophomore pitcher Jason Hastings. He struck out five and walked three.
â€śHe was solid,â€ť Bryant Coach Kirk Bock said. â€śHe did a really good job. He had a good day.â€ť
POYEN - The 2013 softball season, though it is still early, has been good to the Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals thus far. After winning 6 of its first 7 contests, including a 6-1 win over Arkadelphia on Monday, Harmony Grove got back to work on Tuesday, adding yet another win to the stat sheet.
With red-hot bats and golden gloves, the Lady Cardinals took down the Lady Indians of Poyen with a 19-1 rout on the road. Led by great hitting and stellar pitching, the Lady Cardinals paced their way to a 7-1 start to the year.
BRYANT â€“ For the baseball purist, Tuesday nightâ€™s 7A/6A South conference opener between rivals Benton Panthers and Bryant Hornets was the game to be at. The Panthers topped the defending 7A State Champion Hornets 1-0 in a pitcherâ€™s duel between Benton senior left-hander Coulton Lee and Bryant senior right-hander Nate Rutherford.
BENTON â€“ After defeating Russellville 9-1 in the opening round of the Benton Panther Invitational, the Benton Panthers finished the tournament in third place, losing to North Little Rock 3-0 on Friday, but handling Hot Springs Lakeside 6-2 on Saturday.
The Panthers (2-1) ran into a buzz saw against North Little Rock as starting pitcher Preston Oberling and reliever Spencer Byrd combined to give up one hit against Benton, while striking out 15 Panthers.
GREENWOOD â€“ The Benton Panthers fell to the Jonesboro Golden Hurricane 61-51 to end their record-breaking season in the semifinals of the 6A State Tournament in Greenwood on Saturday. The Panthers end the year with a school record 27 wins against just three losses and went undefeated in winning the 6A South conference.
RUSSELLVILLE â€“ The Bryant Lady Hornets softball team saw their 37-game win streak come to an end in the first game of the 2013 season with a 2-0 loss to the Russellville Lady Cyclones on Thursday at Russellville. Bryant has won the past three 7A State Championships and went a perfect 34-0 last season.
Russellville pitcher Andrea Kindrick gave up just one hit to the Lady Hornets (0-1), dominating Bryant on the night.
