BENTON – The Benton Panthers 7-on-7 team got to flex its muscles once again as the Panthers defeated Maumelle 28-21 in the championship game of the 1st Annual Benton Panthers 7-on-7 Tournament on Tuesday at Panthers Stadium to win their second straight 7-on-7 tournament.
“They like to flex their muscles so that’s what we do,” Panthers Coach Scott Neathery said. “It’s kind of funny. The kids like to do it. If they win, we let them do it. It’s a good group of kids and they like to have a good time.”
Talk about capping off your high school career in style. Roughly a month after the Bryant Hornets won their third 7A State Championship in the past five seasons, former Hornets shortstop Trevor Ezell was honored with the Gatorade Player of the Year award on Monday at Bishop Park in Bryant.
“It is kind of hard to believe,” Ezell said. “It is a great honor. I’ve been playing with and against some of the greatest kids in the state, so to be named that really feels special. It is definitely humbling for me.”
LITTLE ROCK – Former UALR shortstop Austin Pfeiffer has been selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 27th round on the 2014 MLB Draft. In 2014 Pfeiffer hit .253 with five home runs while starting every one of the Trojans 54 games at shortstop.
“Well the first person to contact me was my mother,” Pfeiffer said about how he found out he had been selected. “She called me and told me the good news shortly before the Orioles contacted me.”
Pfeiffer said the Orioles congratulated him and said they look forward to what he can bring to their organization.
