Talk about capping off your high school career in style. Roughly a month after the Bryant Hornets won their third 7A State Championship in the past five seasons, former Hornets shortstop Trevor Ezell was honored with the Gatorade Player of the Year award on Monday at Bishop Park in Bryant.
“It is kind of hard to believe,” Ezell said. “It is a great honor. I’ve been playing with and against some of the greatest kids in the state, so to be named that really feels special. It is definitely humbling for me.”
LITTLE ROCK – Former UALR shortstop Austin Pfeiffer has been selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 27th round on the 2014 MLB Draft. In 2014 Pfeiffer hit .253 with five home runs while starting every one of the Trojans 54 games at shortstop.
“Well the first person to contact me was my mother,” Pfeiffer said about how he found out he had been selected. “She called me and told me the good news shortly before the Orioles contacted me.”
Pfeiffer said the Orioles congratulated him and said they look forward to what he can bring to their organization.
BENTON – After a 6-6 record last year, it’s best since the 2005 season, the Benton Panther football team closes its spring portion of its schedule, six practices including Friday night’s spring scrimmage at Panthers Stadium, featuring its hurry-up offense.
It’s not over until it’s over. That could be the new motto for the 2014 Benton Lady Panthers. Down to their last strike and an unlikely hero at the plate in the 6A State Championship game, the Lady Panthers had their lives changed forever.
It took just one swing to rejuvenate a packed house Friday at Bogle Park in Fayetteville. Staring at a full count with two on and down 1, freshman slugger Breanna Langford deposited possibly the biggest hit in school history over the fence in left field.
