In her first game for the Lady Miners three years ago, Elizabeth Harris didn't even know where she would be in the lineup, which head coach Wes Mode announced as the game was starting against the defending state champions.
"My name was first, and I was playing center field," she said. "I looked at coach Mode and said, 'Are you nuts?!'"
The freshman leadoff hitter, who's now a senior and still bats first in the Bauxite lineup, calmed her nerves, stepped up to the plate and hit a double.
"After that hit I was fine," she said.
In a 6A South battle Friday night, Benton and Texarkana went into extra innings with Benton winning 3-2 thanks to a clutch two-out hit by senior Ashton Roberts.
Tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth with junior Garrison Roy on second base, Roberts hit a double to score Roy, which would prove to be the winning run after the Panthers held Texarkana scoreless in its next at bat.
Benton (17-4, 9-2 6A South) remains in first place in the conference and will host Sheridan at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
April 22nd
BRYANT â Bryant took the first game of a doubleheader Friday against Van Buren, which was postponed Thursday due to inclement weather.
The Hornets won 12-2 in six innings. The results of the second game were not available by press time.
Bryant (17-4, 7-2 7A Central) went into Fridayâs game with a two-game lead in the conference.
Junior Jordan Taylor pitched all six innings for the Hornets and earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
Head coach Kirk Bock said, âJordan did a great job today.â
Two Benton High School students, Jacie Gregory and Jenny Belz, will be cheering for the Arkansas Razorbacks next year.
However, unlike most Fayetteville freshman they will be doing so on the sidelines because both were named earlier this month to the 2011 cheerleading squad.
Belz, 17, the daughter of Dan and Mary Belz, and Gregory, 17, the daughter of Jim and Jana Gregory, will join former Panthers cheerleader Carly Glover, 19, who graduated from Benton in 2010.
April 21st
With a two-game lead in the 6A South, Bryant is looking to distance itself from the competition in a doubleheader with Van Buren today.
Weather permitting, Bryant will host Van Buren beginning at 4 p.m. However, head coach Mike Bock said there are a handful of options âdepending on what the weather does.â
If needed, Bock said both teams could play today at UALRâs Curran Conway Field, or the Hornets could jump on a bus and head to Van Buren.
Also, the game could be rescheduled for tomorrow at either Sheridan or Van Buren.
âI donât think there was a game played yesterday in the state,â Benton head coach Eric Ryan said Thursday morning after Wednesdayâs storms postponed the scheduled game between Lake Hamilton and the Lady Panthers.
Benton (18-5, 9-1 6A South) will play at Texarkana Friday at 5 p.m. The game against Lake Hamilton has been moved to Thursday, May 5. Ryan said they considered moving the game to today, but with more bad weather expected to hit this afternoon Ryan didnât want to risk it.
Ryan said Texarkana has really improved throughout the year and are a âscrappy bunch.â

The Bryant varsity boys soccer team finally had it.
On Monday night at Bryant stadium the boys finally were on the receiving end of a one-goal win against Little Rock Central. Bryant had suffered a one-goal loss in Little Rock to start the 7A Conference schedule.
Controversy ensued even before the ball was placed in play. Central forgot to bring their away jerseys so they had to wear white, forcing the Hornets back into the locker room to change into their blue jerseys.
BAUXITE â After giving up four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Harmony Grove coach Brandon Kelly called timeout and met with his players on the mound.
âI pulled the infield in and told them nobody was hurt,â Kelly said. âThe lead wasnât safe, so it was time to bear down and get out of it.â
Harmony Grove relief pitcher Bodie Harris would get out of the inning by picking off Bauxiteâs Austin Harris at first base and striking out Tanner Bates to end the inning.
April 19th
BAUXITE â In what was an otherwise even matched game Monday, a disastrous fifth inning resulted in the Miners losing their second straight game going into todayâs Senior Day against Harmony Grove.
Bauxite (11-11, 2-4 4A-7) fell 10-3 to Mayflower (3A) Monday after losing 11-4 to Nashville (4A) Friday.
However, head coach Michael Mattox said, with the 4A-7 District Tournament approaching next week, âAll it takes is one game to sparkâ a winning streak.
The Sheridan Yellowjackets are in a bad funk right now and arenât hitting or playing as well as they were to begin the season.
Their skid continued Monday night with a 5-3 loss to Lakeside at home.
âWe just arenât playing real well right now,â Sheridan coach Mike Moore said. âWe got some things going mentally. We are thinking too much and trying too hard.
âWe need to simplify some things and get back to some basics and fundamentals.â
