BRYANT – Junior guard Jakeria Otey started and finished the game by missing two free throws for the Bryant Lady Hornets, but in between she put on solid offensive display scoring 18 points to help lift the Hornets to a 43-38 win against the Texarkana Razorbacks in a conference game at home in Bryant Friday night.
The win improved the Lady Hornets to 2-3 in conference play and 6-9 overall. Texarkana started the game off quickly by taking a 9-3 lead early in the game that forced Bryant Head Coach Brad Matthews to take a timeout.
TEXARKANA – The Benton Panthers picked up an important road victory on Tuesday night upending the Arkansas High Razorbacks 58-42 in Texarkana.
“I’m very pleased our guards are coming along,” Benton Coach Dwaine Fishburn said. “In over 25 years, I’ve never coached a team that has this low turnovers as this group has. We’re only averaging five to six turnovers a game and that’s remarkable.”
Benton (12-5, 3-1 South) would lead 12-9 after the first quarter before expanding their lead to 30-17 over the Razorbacks at halftime.
SHERIDAN – Up by eight points early in the second half, the Bryant Lady Hornets couldn’t hold on as they lost 56-51 to the Sheridan Lady Jackets in 7A/6A South Conference play in Sheridan on Tuesday night.
Junior guard Jakeria Otey scored a season-high 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field, and senior forward Aubree Allen double-doubled with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but despite playing solid defense, Bryant couldn’t stop Sheridan’s Kadesha Cooper down the stretch in the loss.
BAUXITE - On Friday, two girls’ basketball teams with equally dismal records in 7-4A action met up for a game. Both teams recently suffered similar fates against Malvern. Arkansas Baptist used the first few minutes of this game to secure a lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the night. It would be the Lady Eagles of Arkansas Baptist leaving with a hard-fought prize, winning by a score of 56 - 43.
