Benton advances to tourney finals

March 25, 2011

BENTON — Benton broke a 5-5 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to eventually defeat Fayetteville 8-7 in the 2011 Central Arkansas Invitational Friday night.

“We got down early, and they hit the ball,” coach Mark Balisterri said. “They had seven hits in two innings and they scored five runs.

“I told the guys, ‘Look, if we are going to give up runs, early is when you want to give them up. This way you have a chance of fighting back.’”
“Just peck away and we don’t have to get it all back in one inning.”

Lady Hornets impress in Tennessee tournament

March 25, 2011

The Bryant Lady Hornets won two games Thursday in a tournament being held in Clarksville, Tenn.

Bryant head coach Debbie Clark said the trip was a bit of a hassle, trying to leave on a bus that wouldn’t start and eventually landing themselves in bumper-to-bumper traffic 100 miles outside of Nashville, which required a police escort for the Lady Hornets.

“It’s already been quite a trip,” she said.

However, the team arrived focused and ready to play, winning 6-3 against tournament host Clarksville High School and 15-1 against Clarskville Northwest.

“Joseph has a lot of power and we are glad to have him back in the line up,” coach Mark Balisterri said. “He is definitely going to be a big plus for this team.”

GOCIO: Bonds of the ballpark can last a lifetime

March 22, 2011

Most of my time spent working as of late has been at the ballpark.

Let’s face it, everyone would rather be doing something else, sometimes anything else, than work. But, when your desk is the bleachers and there’s a concession stand a few feet away, it makes working a little more tolerable.

Spending time watching all these baseball and softball games has reminded me of a million little things I loved so much growing up. There hasn’t been a game where I haven’t seen or heard something that takes me back, and I chuckle a little inside.

The defending 7A State Champions are looking to iron out some bad habits before getting into the thick of the season.
