LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) â€” Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe is declaring a statewide emergency because of the wintry storm that's hitting the state.
Beebe declared a statewide disaster on Thursday afternoon.
The governor's office says that combined with additional proclamations, the disaster declaration will ease restrictions on utility crews, fuel haulers and propane deliveries during the wintry storm.
Benton, Bryant, Bauxite, Harmony Grove and Glen Rose has announced that they will be closed tomorrow because of increment weather. The University of Central Arkansas will be closed starting today at 3:30 p.m.
Brenda Kay Lincoln, 66, of Benton went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013.
She was born Oct. 24, 1947, in Texarkana, Texas, to the late Earl Franklin Nelson and Julia Faye Barlow Nelson.
Brenda was an active member of Northside Church of Christ, where she was instrumental in starting the church day care school. She also spent 30-plus years working in numerous positions at the church camp and was active with the church food pantry.
AccuWeather.com reports an ice storm will affect millions of people into Friday and threaten to cut power for hundreds of thousands from northern Texas to western Kentucky.â€¨Travel by vehicle or foot will be dangerous during and after the storm, due to icy roads and falling trees and power lines.
Major David Mattingly sent out a press release encouraging safety during the impending winter storm. Mattingly said, "We have held discussions with all department heads regarding whatever assistance the city can provide as a result of a bad winter storm. As we receive notice of where warming shelters will be located we will post that information on our website."
The city has been notified by Northside Church of Christ that they will be open as a warming center and can be reach at (501)315-1128.
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Saline County has canceled its Holiday Home Tour scheduled for Sunday, December 8th from 2 to 4 p.m. due to impending winter weather.
The Board canceled the Tour Wednesday out of concern for the homeowners, who were so graciously opening their homes, the Tour attendees and the CASA volunteers.
HASKELL -- After losing its first two games of the season, Harmony Grove (2-2) has made statements out of its last two opponents, winning by a combined 112-35. The Lady Cardinals put a hurt on the Woodlawn Lady Bears to open the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament on Tuesday, winning 55-26.
â€śI thought we had really good effort in the second half,â€ť Head Coach John White said. â€śThe shot selection was better and the effort in general helped us pull away with a big third quarter.â€ť
Though the score was heavily weighted in Harmony Groveâ€™s favor, the first half was a much closer game.
HASKELL â€“ Senior Allison Tackett and junior Holly Willmon scored 22 points each in a 51-39 Bauxite Lady Miner victory over the Poyen Lady Indians in the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament on Tuesday in Daniel Henley Fieldhouse.
Behind her 22 points, Tackett pulled down 13 rebounds, dished out four assists, many to the 6-2 Willmon down low, adding a steal and block to her resume.
Dennis Wayne Wormington, 39, of Texarkana, Texas, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013. Dennis was born April 19, 1974 in Texarkana, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Wormington of Texarkana, Texas; three sons, Austin, Zachary and Hayden, all of Texarkana, Texas; his mother and step-father, Judy and Howard Pittman; his father and stepmother, David and Lucky Wormington, all of Texarkana, Texas; one sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Stacy Starrett of DeKalb, Texas; one niece, Taylor Pickle; and one nephew, Tyler Pickle, both of DeKalb, Texas; and other family and friends.
Charles W. Willfong went to be with the Lord on Dec. 2, 2013. He was born Feb. 4, 1944, to William Marion Willfong and Vada Inez Edwards Willfong in Little Rock.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Ozella Willfong and son Raymond Jr. and Junior and Rosemary Willfong and their children, Juanita, Bill, and Sissy; a grandson, Austin Willfong; and a son-in-law, Michael Williams.
