Miners clinch conference

February 13, 2015

BAUXITE – With second place Arkadelphia and Malvern losing on Tuesday night, the Bauxite Miners won beating the Waldron Bulldogs 49-43 to clinch the 7-4A Conference title and clinched the No. 1 seed in the 7-4A District Tournament which Bauxite hosts on Monday at Fred Dawson Gym.

“At the end of the day, we got another win in conference,” Bauxite Coach Andy Brakebill said, “and with Malvern (9-4) and Arkadelphia (9-4) losing, it gave us the outright conference title no matter what happens Friday.”

Flu or fluke? Harmony Grove High reports 36 percent absenteeism

February 13, 2015

HASKELL — With 36 percent of its students missing class this week, Harmony Grove High School is operating “as normal as possible,” Superintendent Daniel Henley said.

Of the 360 high school students, 130 were absent on Wednesday. In addition to the absent students, Henley said six of the high school’s 30 or so teachers have been home since the absenteeism spike started Tuesday.
Influenza is partly to blame.

“Some of it probably is flu,” Henley said. “I’m sure some [students] went to the doctor and some of them didn’t. Some of them were showing flu-like symptoms.”
