When the going gets tough, the tough gets a Humvee

The sleet and ice that made city streets slippery this week has kept most drivers from venturing out of the driveway, and has closed schools and shut many small businesses. But snow days simply aren’t allowed with some professions, especially those related to the emergency field.

In response to the slick roadways, the Benton Police Department has deployed one of its most useful weapons it has for times of severe weather: a military-grade Humvee able to crawl over the white stuff with impressive ease.

UPDATE: Police investigating accidental shooting

Police officials in Benton are piecing together information stemming from a shooting that left a bullet lodged in a person’s buttocks.

Details listed in a report at the Benton Police Department were scant, but officers were dispatched at 9:14 a.m. Monday to 611 N. Summit Ave. to investigate a report of a “possible accidental shooting.” The police report indicates that the victim had been “accidentally shot in the buttocks by his friend.” The gun used in the shooting was a .380 caliber Ruger handgun.

Bryant School Board, Benton Street Committee meetings canceled

Two meetings that were scheduled to take place today have been canceled.
The Bryant School Board meeting has be rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Professional Development Center.
The Benton Street & Drainage Committee meeting that was scheduled to take place tonight at 6 p.m. has also been canceled.

Class 6A state tourney postponed on Friday. Will continue on Saturday.
