Bryant routs for 1st conf. win

LITTLE ROCK – The Bryant Lady Hornets picked up their first 7A/6A South conference win of the season with a 61-14 drubbing of the JA Fair Lady War Eagles on Friday night in Little Rock. Ten different Lady Hornets scored in the game as Bryant used a 29-0 run between the first and second quarters to propel it to the rout.
“I thought we were able to get out early,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “We got some transition baskets, got a little confidence and I thought we played well. This was a good win for us coming off a tough one Tuesday. It’s good to get back on the winning track.”

Nora Lavone Cook

Nora Lavone Cook, 81, of Benton passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2013.  She was born May 27, 1931, in Star City.
Mrs. Cook was a homemaker and a member of West Bauxite Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Pauline Wimberly; her husband, John H. Cook; and three brothers, Wesley, Harold and Walter Wimberly.

Herbert C. Reagan

Herbert C. Reagan, 88, died Jan. 4, at his home in Benton after a long illness. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Benton, where the Rev. Mike Titsworth is pastor. 
He is survived by his beloved wife, Norma; a brother Louis V. Reagan of Fortuna, Calif.,; and his children and their spouses,Curtis and Barbara Walsh of Indianapolis, Ind., Wendy and Thomas Shipman of Frisco, Texas, and Michael and Crandolyn Reagan of Bloomington, Calif. 
Cremation service was provided by Ashby Funeral Home.

L. C. (Candy) Revis

L.C. (Candy) Revis, 90, of Benton died Wednesday, Jan. 9. He was born March 11, 1922, in Scott. L.C. was retired from Reynolds Mining.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Mattie Wright Revis; wife Vera Mae Revis; four brothers; and two sisters.
He is survived by his son, Jerry Revis of Alexander; daughters Janis Stith and Lynda Shelton, both of Benton; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Jan 14, at Ashby Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow at Lee Cemetery.

It's a small world after all

This year like many years in the past, I made the trip down to War Memorial to see the Salt Bowl between the Benton Panthers and the Bryant Hornets. Again this year over 20,000 people gathered to see this high school football game. Many doubted the crowd would be that big this year since the game was moved to the fourth week of the football season, but the naysayers were wrong. The Saline County shootout drew another huge crowd. That is what I call having a passion for football.

Longhills stockholders seeking court action regarding covenant

Longhills Inc. is seeking a declaratory judgment in Saline County Circuit Court in regard to a 1986 covenant that restricted the use of the property to a golf course and related activities, such as a tennis court, swimming pool and pro shop.
This action is sought through a lawsuit filed by Longhills stockholders, which include Jeff and Mary Jean Busken and Jeff and Sam Hamm.
The owners are asking the court to stop the enforcement of the covenant.

BREAKING NEWS: Suspect in Shell store robbery was arrested late Saturday

UPDATE: A man that allegedly robbed a Shell Superstop in Benton on Thursday was arrested by Little Rock police late Saturday.
As of press time, 20-year-old Daniel Glenn Caple remains in the Pulaski County Regional jail. He faces two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of theft of property, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of terroristic threatening by Benton police. Additionally, Caple faces charges of aggravated robbery and theft of property by the Little Rock Police Department.
Caple will be extradited to Saline County jail, authorities said.

B.R. McGinty

B.R. McGinty, 79, of Bryant passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, at his home. He was born Dec. 8, 1933.
Mr. McGinty was owner and founder of B. R. McGinty Mechanical Contractors served customers for 48 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War from 1952 to 1957 and was a member of Geyer Springs First Baptist Church.

Martha Elizabeth Nowlin Statler

Martha Elizabeth Nowlin Statler, 86, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Jan. 9.
She was born in Rolla on May 2, 1926, to the late Bill and Martha Elliott Nowlin.  She was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Traskwood and loved reading, teaching, and traveling.

Clenton R. Cash

Clenton R. Cash, 79, of Benton passed away Jan. 8. Clenton was born Feb. 1, 1933. in the family home on Cash Mountain Road in Saline City to James Cash and Frances McDougal. He loved music and the outdoors.
Clenton retired from Alcoa after working 42 years as an electrical supervisor. He served as choir director for numerous churches and was a member of the Happy Day Gospel Singers.
