Cleve Barfield, who has served as Saline County sheriff since August 2013, will be leaving the office at the end of the calendar year. Barfield was selected as sheriff following the retirement of Bruce Pennington, who left the position following an arrest for public intoxication.
On Nov. 4, county residents will select a new sheriff by choosing between Republican Rodney Wright and Democrat Rodney Goshien.
BENTON â€” It didnâ€™t start well for the Benton Lady Panther ninth-grade team, but it came up victorious over Cabot South for a school-record 9-0 Central Arkansas Junior High Conference mark and finished the regular season 25-3 before the conference tournament on Saturday in Russellville.
The Jr. Lady Panthers were down 12-5 in the first set before coming back to win 26-24, and won the second game easily 25-11 for the match and the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
MAGNOLIA â€“ Benton Junior High volleyball Coach Michelle Shoppach, or otherwise known as â€śCoach Shoopâ€ť, was inducted into the Southern Arkansas University Hall of Fame on Friday in the Grand Hall of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center at SAU. A Benton native, Shoppach coached the SAU Lady Mulerider program from 1990 to 1997 and led it to a 157-88 record in her time there.
The 157 wins ranks her second all-time among SAU volleyball coaches, and four of her teams won over 20 matches in a season. Shoppach led the Lady Muleriders to a 32-11 record in 1994.
