Bauxite boys, girls sweep Magnet Cove

A close game throughout turned into a 61-55 victory for the Bauxite Lady Miners over the Magnet Cove Lady Panthers in non-conference action Monday night at Fred Dawson Gym in Bauxite.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” Bauxite Coach Josh Harrison said. “Magnet Cove is a very skilled and hard-working team. They’ve got a lot of talent, they shoot the ball well and they’re very aggressive.”
Lady Miners junior Mary Crow scored 14 points in the first half on her way to a 24-point, six-rebound, six-assist night. She added two steals.

Benton Planning Commission approves Longhills rezone request

A request to rezone Longhills Golf Course from single-family residential to Planned Unit Development was unanimously approved by the Benton Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday night, but not before lengthy discussion that involved both supporters and opponents to the proposal.
The request, one of two items on the commission's agenda, had drawn a standing-room-only crowd.

Wanda Jean Parks

Wanda Jean Parks, 85, of Haskell-Benton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13.  She was born Sept. 1, 1926, in Little Rock.  Mrs. Parks was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Harmony Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nick and Louella Mandrel; her husband, William Henry Parks Sr.; and a daughter, Carolyn Parks. 

Reba Scharbor

Reba Scharbor, 92, of Little Rock, formerly of Booneville, passed away, Thursday, Dec. 8, in Little Rock. She was born Aug. 19, 1919, near Branch to Raymond and Grace Aldridge Barnes.
She was retired from the Wolverine Toy Co. and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Booneville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Scharbor, and a granddaughter, Karen McConnell.

School Board accepts Felan's withdrawal from VP slot; Heath Nix takes role

Dr. Joe Felan, a member of the Benton School Board, held true to his promise not to continue serving as vice president of the seven-member board and Heath Nix, one of the board's two newest members, has been elected to fill that post.
That action occurred Monday night in the regular December meeting of the board at Ringgold Elementary School.
Felan had been elected vice president of the body in the board's November meeting, but decided later that his philosophy does not coincide with that of the board president, Jeff Morrow, nor with the majority of the board members.

Crash takes life of recent Benton High graduate

A recent Benton High School graduate known for community service died and two other Benton men were injured in a vehicle accident early Sunday, according to a report from the Arkansas State Police.
Tanner Nalley, who turned 19 on Nov. 21, reportedly was driving southbound on Arkansas 5 South around 9 a.m. Sunday when an unknown northbound vehicle crossed the center line and into the path of Nalley's vehicle just past Harrison Road. The report said Nalley swerved to avoid the oncoming vehicle and lost control of his 1999 Jeep.

Former Bauxite resident found dead in Mayflower

The search for a missing Bauxite native in Cabot came to a tragic end when authorities discovered her body in a hayfield late Friday.
Family members said that Allison Hankins, 22, walked away from her biological mother's home in the 5500 block of Bayou Meto Loop in Cabot around 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, and had made no contact with family for days. A family member also told The Saline Courier that Hankins was "supposed to go to the Job Corps" and that Hankins left without a cell phone, wallet or other personal items.

David Wayne Sharp, 48, of Malvern died on Saturday, Dec. 10, while at home with his family. David was a member of Gospal Light Baptist Church. David was preceded in death by his grandparents; Labon and Marilla Sharp and Jimmy and Irene Clements, his father Orvin Sharp and one sister Melody Sharp.
He is survived by one son, Austin Chase Sharp, daughter Valorie Morgan Sharp, his mother Elizabeth Lovell, two brothers; Duane Sharp and wife, Renee of Long Beach, MS and James Sharp and wife, Carol of Traskwood.

Holly Irene Greenabaum

Holly Irene Greenabaum, 64, of Little Rock died Sunday, Dec.11, in Little Rock. She was born Oct. 31, 1947 in Williamsport, Pa.
Holly was a homemaker and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her parents, Morgan and Hilda Williams, daughter, Kim Greenabaum. 
Survivors include her husband, William Greenabaum of Little Rock; a son, Robert Pfirman of Pennsylvania; a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and James Stearns Jr., of Bryant; two brothers, Tom Williams and Terry Williams, both of Pennsylvania; three granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.
