Haskell council to vote on water rates

September 6, 2014

The final reading of an ordinance and a companion resolution to increase water rates in Haskell will be heard during the regular monthly meeting of the City Council on Monday, Sept. 8.

The ordinance had been reviewed in prior monthly meetings of the council.

If it is approved, the customer rates for water and sewer service in the city will increase from 2 percent annually to 4 percent.

Mayor Jeff Arey says the measures being considered are the result of findings from an annual audit in the city.

This has been a normal practice by the City Council since 2004, Arey noted.

Bryant residents to see slight increase in water rates

The average Bryant water customers will see an increase of approximately $6.55 a month on their water bill from 2015 to 2017.

Many city officials in Bryant originally thought this increase would be much higher.

"I'm very pleased. It's the price of a happy meal," said Public Works Director Monty Ledbetter.

For Bryant residents to receive water, the city purchases water from Central Arkansas Water and then sells water to residents. Three years ago, CAW announced that it would be increasing prices, but the city absorbed the extra cost.

One man was arrested and another man received a citation following a physical confrontation at the old Saline County Airport on Airlane Drive.

Before the dispute, the men had been flying model airplanes. A verbal disagreement escalated into a physical skirmish, said Lt. Kevin Russell, Benton Police Department spokesperson.

According to Russel, Robert Runyan, 69, of Traskwood was charged with disorderly conduct, carrying a prohibited weapon and aggravated assault; and James Dougherty, 65, of Benton was cited for disorderly conduct and terroristic threatening.
