Gun control group to hold rally in Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK — A gun control group is holding a rally in Little Rock to urge U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor to take another look at a measure expanding background checks for firearm sales.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group co-founded by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is holding the rally Friday at Allsopp Park. The event comes as the group is airing ads in Arkansas criticizing Pryor for voting against the background checks measure.

The rally will feature survivors of gun violence.

Book-to-Movie Club meets Saturday at the library

The Book-to-Movie Club will meet Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at Herzfeld Library. The event includes a movie viewing, followed by a discussion of the book "Holes," by Louis Sachar. Light refreshments will be provided. Call 501-778-4766 for more information. It is free and open to all ages.

Madean 'Dumpy Rickard

Madean “Dumpy” Rickard, 78, of Bryant died Thursday June 13, 2013. She was born Oct. 1, 1934 in Bauxite to Dick and Ona Daugherty.
She was a 1952 graduate of Bauxite High School and Capitol City Business College. She had worked for Saline County Social Services and the Saline County Tax Collector's Office. Madean was a member of East Smith Street Church of Christ.
She was given the nickname “Dumpy” and was known by her family and many friends by this name.

Leonard E. 'Lenny' Boyer

Leonard E. "Lenny" Boyer, 67. of rural Oronogo (Jasper County, Mo.), passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013. Lenny was the seventh son born to the late Chester Vern and Mabel Agnes (Means) Boyer on March 12, 1946.
Lenny graduated from Alba High School in 1964. He was named in the top 100 in the United States to the Little All-American Basketball team as a senior and was given the Sports Illustrated Award of Merit on March 23, 1964. Upon graduating from high school, Lenny signed a professional baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, following in the footsteps of his older brothers.

Faye F. Emmons

Faye F. Emmons, 83, of Benton passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013. She was born Jan. 7, 1930, in San Angelo, Texas.
Faye was a homemaker and a member of Tyndall Park Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Kelvin and Katie Marshall Williams; her husband, John D. Emmons; her brothers, Fred and Earl Williams; and her sisters, Judy Metcalf, Aline Erwin and Loyce Fisher.
She is survived by her sons, Steve Emmons of Benton, John Scott Emmons of Texas, and Alan Emmons of Benton; six grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

David W. Smith

David W. Smith, 40, of Marion died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 11. 2013.  He was a devoted husband and father and warehouse manager for Coca-Cola for 15 years and a member of the West Memphis First United Methodist Church. 
David was an avid hunter, enjoyed coaching his children in sports and enjoyed spending time with his family.

FBI seeking robber dubbed 'Loan Ranger Bandit'

LITTLE ROCK— The FBI and police in three states are searching for a bank robber they call the "Loan Ranger Bandit."

The man is suspected of robbing at least 10 banks at gunpoint in Arkansas, Texas and Mississippi from January 2009 to October 2012. The FBI says he walks into the bank undisguised and demands 20, 50, and 100-dollar bills.

No one has been injured — but the man is considered armed and dangerous.

Lake Norrell fireworks fundraiser set for Saturday

A fundraiser for the Lake Norrell fireworks celebration will be 5 p.m. Saturday at the Lake Norrell Community Center.
The Lake Norrell Area Association will host the annual event, which includes dinner and a quilt raffle. Barbecue dinner will be $10 for adults. Hot dogs for the kids is $5 (for ages 5-10), kids plates for 4 and under are free. The association is selling raffle tickets for a queen size quilt, tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. McClendon's fall in Mountain Home

MOUNTAIN HOME – The Benton McClendon’s dropped a 14-3 decision to DeSoto, Mo., in the Twin Lakes Classic in Mountain Home on Wednesday to fall to 2-6 on the season. The McClendon’s will play Batesville today at 3:30 and will play host Mountain Home at noon on Friday.

State, feds file complaint over Arkansas oil spill

NORTH LITTLE ROCK — State and federal prosecutors in Arkansas are seeking civil penalties from ExxonMobil Pipeline Co. over the company's oil spill in a central Arkansas neighborhood.

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel and U.S. Attorney Chris Thyer announced Thursday that state and federal prosecutors filed a joint enforcement action against Exxon, alleging violations of environmental laws.

Exxon's Pegasus pipeline ruptured on March 29 in Mayflower, spilling an estimated 5,000 barrels of oil and causing the evacuation of more than 20 homes. Some nearby residents have sued the company.
