Jean Bittman Hersh, 91, of Howell, Mich., passed away at her home on Saturday, Dec. 17. Â Born Dec. 7, 1920, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Abraham and Ethel (Schultz) Bittman. Jean was retired, having owned and operated her own travel agency.
She was the beloved wife of Harold Hersh, whom she married in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Feb, 14, 1946. She was the loving mother of Sydney Moody and husband Bobby of Howell and Ann Hudson and husband Thomas of Benton.

Marvell Mashburn, 81, of Alexander, passed away Friday, December 16, 2011 at Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton.Â
She was born on December 17, 1929 in Enola, Arkansas to the late Charles Ellis Woodward and Amber Woodward.Â
She attended Humphrey High School. She was a charter member of Highway Church of Christ in Benton. She enjoyed taking trips with her late husband of over forty years, Bezell Mashburn and reading. She also enjoyed spending time with her dogs, Layla Mae, October, and Skylar.
Melba Aliene Moore Jones, 93, of Bryant, departed this life on December 16, 2011.Â
She was born on November 16, 1918 in Des Arc, Arkansas to the late John and Addie Moore.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Jones; sisters, Carrie McDonald, Flossie Sanders, Eleanor Harvey, Wilma Moore, Sally McClellan Williams and Esther Moore; brothers, Harry Moore and John Moore, Jr.; and father in law, Reese Jones.
Royce Johnson, 49, of Perryville, passed away Friday, December 16, 2011.Â
He was born October 31, 1962 in Little Rock, Arkansas.Â
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Henry and Johnnie Lee Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Johnson; son, Joseph Freirmuth; brother, Harry Johnson and two sisters, Darline Jones and Patricia Martin.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 19 at Ashby Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 20 at Ida Mission Cemetery.

Walter Rolland Pollich Jr., 76 of Benton, died Friday, December 16, 2011.Â
Walter was born January 1, 1935 in Long Beach, Calif. to the late Walter Rolland Pollich, Sr. and Dorothy Nell (Burkhart) Pollich.Â
Mr. Pollich served four years in the US Navy, retired from Owens Illinois; and owner, operator of the Starting Gate Lounge in Hot Springs.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Judith (Runte) Pollich; and brother Kenneth Pollich.Â
Thomas Harold Penn, 77, of Benton, passed away Friday, December 16, 2011.Â
He was born January 8, 1934.Â
Mr. Penn was a U.S. Army Veteran and retired from the Benton Service Center.Â
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Lois Penn; brother, William Penn; sister, Mary Lois Brooks and a son-in-law, Brian Wake.
Jimmy Dale “KO” Tarvin, 76, of Lonsdale passed away Thursday, Dec. 15.
He was born Feb. 18, 1935, in Lonsdale to the late Louis and Valeria Tarvin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, George and Octavia Steely of Lonsdale.
Jimmy served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired in 1974 after 22 years of service.
Susie Everett has maintained a love and respect for Ouachita Baptist University since she was a student there in the mid-1970s.
Though she obtained her nursing degree from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, she earned her basic college credits during her two and a half years at OBU and now she's helping the school in an advisory capacity.
Everett, who spreads her talents and leadership among many area groups and agencies, is one of the four newest members of the OBU Board of Trustees.

An orange safety vest and a friendly wave is all most people know of "The Can Man." He could be seen nearly every day along the roadside on the southwest part of Benton in search of aluminum. His wave became a regular part of his daily routine for commuters merging onto I-30 near the 114 exit. However, the Can Man has been conspicuous in his absence over the last few months.
The Saline Courier caught up with this familiar face recently and here is his story.
His name is Dotsey Neal. He is 75-years-old. His brother, George Neal, is 78 and spoke for Dotsey during the interview.
The Bauxite Lady Miners improved to 2-0 in the 7-4A conference with a 49-44 victory over the Nashville Lady Scrappers on Friday night at Fred Dawson Gym in Bauxite.
“It was a good game,” Bauxite Coach Josh Harrison said. “It was closely contested. They jumped on us early.”
The Lady Miners (9-3, 2-0) scored the first two baskets of the game, but the Lady Scrappers ended up taking a 13-6 lead after the first quarter.
Bauxite picked up the defense to take a 20-17 halftime lead.
