Walmart donates $7,000 in school supplies

Today's THV partnered with United Way to hold a Back-to-School Blitz school supply drive at Bryant Walmart Thursday evening. United Way has hosted school supply drives around Central Arkansas for seven years, but this was the first year United Way has brought the drive to Saline County.
Walmart donated $7,000 worth of school supplies for the cause, and $2,000 worth of supplies were donated by the community, said Denver Landers, public relations director for United Way.

One new candidate files Thursday at clerk's office

One additional candidate filed for a municipal position Friday, according to Deputy Clerk Darlene Westbrook in Saline County Clerk Freddy Burton's office.
Rob Roedel filed his candidacy for re-election to the Ward 3, Position 2 seat on the Bryant City Council.
The filing period for municipal races opened at 8 a.m. Friday, July 27, and will close at noon Aug. 17.
All municipal positions are nonpartisan and will appear on the ballot in the Nov. 6 general election.
At the close of the day Thursday, the following candidates had filed for the listed municipal races:

Lee Crow to run for Bryant City Council

Lee Crow has announced he is seeking a position on the Bryant City Council this November. He will vie for the Ward 3, Position 1 seat currently held by Adrian Henley.
Crow said he disagrees with Henley’s choice to maintain a website in opposition to the mayor while spearheading a stalled recall effort.

Defense fails Black Sox in tourney loss

The Bryant Black Sox made five errors en route to five unearned runs in a 5-4 loss to the Hub City Bombers (Hattiesburg, Miss.) in the first game of the Mid-South Regional Tournament on Thursday morning in New Orleans. The Black Sox played this morning in a loser's bracket game against Piedmont, Okla., and Bryant has to win at any chance to advance to the American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C. Results will be in tomorrow's Courier.
Two errors in the top of the first inning led to two unearned runs for the Bombers for an early 2-0 deficit for the Black Sox.

Jeremy Flynn Lewallen

Jeremy Flynn Lewallen, 24, of Haskell, passed away Aug. 8.  He was born Nov. 26, 1987, in Magnolia to Clifton Lewallen and Linda Geier Edens. 
Jeremy served in the Army National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Winona Lewallen and Maxine Geier.

Court cases: bond set for Bauxite man charged with rape of juvenile; trial set for negligent homicide case

A $50,000 sheriff's bond was set Wednesday for a Bauxite man accused of raping a 16-year-old boy multiple times.
Jonathan Solomon, 20, who is affiliated with the Army National Guard, is facing three counts of rape, three counts of sodomy and terroristic threatening. The victim reportedly told Bauxite police that the sexual abuse began when he was 15.

White announces run for Benton council position

Greg White, a former Benton alderman, wants to return to the City Council.
White has announced his candidacy for the Ward 1, Position 2 on the council, which he previously held for two terms.
The position currently is held by Alderman Kerry Murphy, who is seeking another term.
In 2010 White chose not to seek another term because of professional obligations.

Black Sox open Regional

The Bryant Black Sox played at 9:30 this morning as they were the opening game of the Mid-South Regional Tournament in New Orleans. The Black Sox played the Hub City Bombers out of Hattiesburg, Miss., and results will be in tomorrow's paper.
The Black Sox won the Arkansas American Legion State Tournament sweeping the field to advance to the regional in New Orleans. The winner of the regional will advance to the American Legion World Series held in Shelby, N.C.

Panthers' golf off to an excellent start

NORTH LITTLE ROCK -- The Benton Panther golf team began the season with a dominant performance in the Yellowjacket Invitational Tournament on Monday at Stonelinks Golf Course in North Little Rock. The Panthers boys and girls team each won their side of the tournament against teams they will be playing throughout the year.
Led by senior Grace Liles’ top score of 79 (+7), the Benton girls team shot a 271 to blow out the competition, which consisted of 7A/6A South conference members, by 13 shots. El Dorado took second with a score of 284, Sheridan 287 and Lake Hamilton shot a 295 for fourth.
