When is a compliment not a compliment? When it's padded with a partial insult.

Some people are notorious for this trait. They can't say something nice and just be done with it.

It's the old foot-in-the-mouth kind of thing, or what I call lefthanded praise. They don't necessarily intend to do this; it just happens.

You know the kind I mean. Like, "Hey, she doesn't look so bad for an old gal."

Or, "Why don't you try this dress? I'll bet it won't make you look so fat."

Arkansas lawmakers study teacher salaries

LITTLE ROCK — State researchers say that it would cost Arkansas taxpayers between about $2 million and up to nearly $7 million to increase the minimum starting teacher salary in public schools.

The Bureau of Legislative Research released the report at a state legislative committee Monday, offering several options to raise the current salary for new educators.

The minimum starting salary for teachers with a bachelor's degree and no teaching experience is about $29,200.

Quorum Court rejects restrictions on county gunfire

A Saline County Quorum Court committee touched on a fiery topic Monday night — one that has been brought before the justices of the peace several times in the past year — but ultimately backed away from the issue without taking any action.

The Finance and Personnel Committee discussed a proposed ordinance that could have regulated what was determined to be the unsafe discharge of a firearm in a congested area of an unincorporated part of the county.
