Benton wins tournament championship

June 18, 2011

The Benton Panthers won 10-4 against Marion in Saturday’s championship game of the Benton Summer High School Showcase Tournament.
Carson Holloway started on the mound for Benton, pitching all seven innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
The Panthers (12-1) made their way to the championship game Saturday by beating North Little Rock 5-3 Friday night.

Three brother, three All-State players

When I visited recently with the three Roberts brothers one thing kept coming up: They made it clear that the support and encouragement from their parents enabled them to excel at whatever they tried.
On Monday, Ashton Roberts will play in the Arkansas All-Star Baseball Game in Fayetteville at Baum Stadium, and next year he will be playing college baseball at Crowder Junior College in Missouri.

Stacy G. Wrights

June 17, 2011

Stacy G. Wrights, 36 of Benton, passed away Monday, June 13, at Saline Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 19, 1975 to Jerome Griffin and Doris Latting in Benton.
Stacy is survived by several brothers and sisters, as well as numerous other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Nicklaus Latting, James Hill and Wesley Hill; two grandmothers, Mary Griffin and Jimmie McCoy.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, June 18th at 2 p.m. at Elect Temple Church of God in Benton, inside the Christ Chapel.

Benton breaks tie with five-run sixth

BENTON — The Benton Panthers scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie Thursday and defeat Vilonia High School 10-5 in the first round of pool play in the Benton Summer High School Showcase Tournament at Panther Stadium.
To begin the sixth, junior Brooks Balisterri led off with a walk and later reached second on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by Carson Holloway, and one out later Grayson Chilton reached on a fielder’s choice.
Back-to-back singles by Brant Stout and Coulton Lee scored Chilton, and a double by Garrison Roy scored another run.

Flora K. Young

June 16, 2011

Flora K. Young, 89, of Erda, Utah, formerly of Benton, went to be with the Lord on June 12.  She passed at home surrounded by family and friends. She was born August 4, 1921, in Saline County to the late Henry Hurliman and Anna Vollenweider Hurliman. On February 16, 1943, she married Clyde D. Young.
Flora was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and a dear friend who enjoyed both her flower and vegetable gardens as well as cooking delicious meals. Mrs. Young was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church for over 50 years.   


Dixie Marie Land Marbury

Dixie Marie Land Marbury, 85, of Benton passed away Tuesday, June 14, at Arkansas Heart Hospital. She was born January 16, 1926, in Benton to the late Rufus Alfred Land and Marie Tibbles Land. Mrs. Marbury retired from the Little Rock Veterans Administration Hospital. She grew up in the First Baptist Church in Benton where she remained a life-long active member. She was always active in the Baptist Church Women’s Missionary Union, even when living in Hawaii and Japan. She was a treasurer of National Association Retired Employees.

Mildred Satterwhite (Grancy) Hinkson

Mildred Satterwhite (Grancy) Hinkson, 96, of Benton died June 14. She was born August 13, 1914, in Hope. Mildred was married to James E. Hinkson, who preceded her in death. She was the mother of seven sons and one daughter, and an active member of Old Union Baptist Church for over 50 years.

Benton Panthers hold on for win over Catholic

BENTON — The Benton High School Summer baseball team got a taste of what it is like to play baseball for a living. With most of the team having played nearly five days straight, including shortstop Brooks Balisterri, and a bullpen and rotation burned up, it was up to pitcher Matthew Krikorian to last as long as possible in Tuesday’s game against Catholic High School.
Having already defeated North Little Rock 3-1 in the first game after Balisterri pitched a complete game, the Benton Panthers were able to hold off a 6th inning rally to defeat Catholic 8-7.

Franklin “Frank” Filmore Newcomb

Franklin “Frank” Filmore Newcomb, 89, of North Little Rock, formerly of Scott and Bryant, died Sunday, June 12. He was born August 21, 1921, in Bigelow to Cora and William Newcomb.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, sister and wife, Juanita. He is survived by his son, Randall and wife, Cindy of North Little Rock; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister.
He was a World War II veteran and a member of All Souls Church in Scott and Indian Springs Baptist Church in Bryant.

McClendon’s rolls past Little Rock Express

Benton McClendon’s Appliance Senior Legion baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Little Rock Express 8-3 Monday night on the campus of UALR.
McClendon’s scored two runs in the first, two in the second and four in the fourth, while Little Rock scored two runs in the second and one run in the third.
Ryne Besancon led off the first with a triple and Levon Steward reached on a fielder’s choice. Steward later scored on a RBI double by Chase Southworth. After a fly out, Corky Welch singled to plate Southworth.
