Benton Summit 2012 'opening doors' for cooperation among groups in city

Representatives of Benton Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the city of Benton, Benton School District and Saline Memorial Hospital came together Wednesday for the first Benton Summit.
The event was held in the media room at Benton High School.
The theme for the summit was "Opening Doors." It was structured as an event to educate the community on the measures being taken by the four featured entities toward mutual cooperation.
Approximately 140 community residents attended.

Morgan Paul Richey

Morgan Paul Richey Jr., 76, of Benton passed away June 19.  He was born Feb. 16, 1936, in Saline County to the late Morgan Paul and Myrtle Richey Sr. 
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Linda Burnett.

Benton council votes to abolish city's parks commission in special session

June 20, 2012

Benton City Council decided Tuesday night to abolish the city's Parks Commission.
The council voted 8-2 — including one "no" vote caused by the absence of a member — for an ordinance that does away with the commission and transfers responsibility for the parks and recreation department to the council.
At the start of the special meeting, Mayor David Mattingly announced that he had convened the session at the request of three aldermen: Jerry Ponder, Steve Lee and Bill Donnor.

Shakespearean classic slated for performances in the park

For the second consecutive week, the Tyndall Park amphitheater will be offering classical theater, this time in a version of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
Performances are scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, June 21-23, and again the following week at 7 p.m. June 28-30.
Last week, the Young Players, the youth theater division of the Royal Players, presented a modern version of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" with performances of "The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet."

Center on mission to eradicate abuse

"It is our goal to eradicate child abuse in all its forms within the next three generations." This is the mission of the Southern Regional Training Center at the NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) in Bentonville.
Wyley Elliot, vice president for public relations and development at NWACC, told the Benton-Bauxite Rotary Club on Tuesday that more than 1 million people in the United States are impacted by child abuse and neglect each year.
The meeting was held at Brown's Country Store and Restaurant.

Staying close to home

BRYANT – Former Bryant Hornet dual-threat player Tyler Nelson isn’t taking his skills far from home when he goes to the next level. Nelson signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the Arkansas Baptist Buffaloes in Little Rock in front of friends and family at the Bryant High School baseball office on Tuesday.

Eddy Zeiter aka Akuma Twilight ‘Spirit’

Akuma Twilight ‘Spirit’ aka Eddy Zeiter 38, of Bauxite passed away on May 30. He was a very giving spirit who treated so many like family. He was known throughout his community for his giving and helpful nature. He would collect toys, and other household goods to distribute to the less fortunate. Though he did not have much himself, he always found something to give. He had a unique sense of humour and loved being a part of his community. He felt as if he belonged, and he loved living in Bauxite on his family property.

James Franklin Hendricks

James Franklin Hendricks, 77, of Benton passed away on June 17 with his family by his side.
Frank was born Aug. 30, 1934, to the late Jim and Ruby Hendricks in Bradford.  He was a member of Indian Springs Baptist Church for more than 20 years.  Frank had a passion for going on rock building missions where they would build churches.  He loved to hunt, fish, woodworking and working in his garden.  Mr. Hendricks retired after 24 years from IBM.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Fran Leavelles

Fran Leavelles, 72, of Benton died Sunday, June 17, in Little Rock. She was born Dec. 12, 1939 in Brownfield, Texas.
Fran was a homemaker and a member of Rock Creek Church.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Johnson Green' and her husband, David Leavelles. 

Christopher Michael Patterson

Christopher Michael Patterson, 35, of Traskwood passed away June 17.  He was born March 9, 1977, in Malvern to Michael Curtis and Brenda Patterson.  Christopher was a member of Victory Baptist Church of Haskell and worked in construction.
He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Curtis Patterson.
