Arkansas GOP leader resigns after Clinton comment

LITTLE ROCK — A district chairman with the Republican Party of Arkansas resigned after he was quoted saying that Hillary Clinton "would probably get shot at the state line" if she ran for president in 2016, the GOP announced Wednesday.

GOP Chairman Doyle Webb says Johnny Rhoda stepped down as 2nd District Republican chairman Wednesday. The day before, U.S. News & World Report reported that Rhoda said in an interview that he didn't believe Clinton was popular in Arkansas and that a presidential campaign wouldn't be well-received.

Parks department to host public hearing

The Benton parks and recreation department will conduct a public hearing at 6 p.m. today to get public input regarding improvements at Ralph Bunche Park.

Parks director John Eckart has stated that he wants to apply for grants to make improvements at the park but wants public opinion on what improvements should be made.

The hearing will take place at the Ralph Bunche Community Center.

An additional public hearing will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, in the council chambers at Benton Municipal Complex.

City officials discuss rationale for proposed employee raises

During an employee appreciation luncheon on June 24, Benton Mayor David Mattingly announced a proposed 4.1 percent, across-the-board pay increase for city employees.

The proposal first must pass through a joint meeting tonight of the Finance Committee and the Personnel Committee in order to be presented at the next City Council meeting for approval.

The last employee raise approved by the council was done with Ordinance 71 of 2011, passed on Dec. 19, 2011. It approved a 2 percent raise effective Jan. 1, 2012.
