Alleged fraud suspect arrested

An Arkansan accused of defrauding more than $40,000 from the City of Bryant was arrested on Friday, April 13, according to the Bryant police.
Christopher Dwayne Barnes, 38, has not been formally charged by the Saline County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, however, in January, an arrest warrant was issued for theft of property on Barnes. He is also wanted in multiple areas throughout the state — Sebastian and Faulkner Counties for theft and in Pope County for nonsupport — for similar fraud crimes, authorities said.

UPDATE: Wanted sex offender is apprehended

The search for a convicted sex offender that failed to comply with registration requirements comes to an end, Benton police said.
Anthony Wayne Page, 25, was apprehended on Monday and is expected to be transferred from the Hot Spring County Jail to the Saline County Jail within the next few days. Authorities said that Page violated terms of his release from jail and that not complying with registration requirements — providing a current address where that person resides — by sex offenders is a felony charge.

Alyce Marion Hewett Mork

Alyce Marion Hewett Mork of Little Rock, passed away April 14. She was born on June 29, 1926 in Lewisville, to the late Francis and Alyce Hewett. Marion was a member of St. Andrew’s Methodist Church and after becoming disabled, looked forward to watching Joel Osteen and other television evangelists. Marion, along with her parents, owned and operated Alyce-Francis Cleaners for over 60 years. She was a faithful member of the Billy Graham Association. She had a great love for animals and her dog, Mindy, was by her side until the end.

John W. Wray

John W. Wray, 87, of Benton went to be the Lord on Sunday, April 15. He was born in Benton on November 9, 1924. He was a retired construction superintendent and a member of the Church of the Nazarene. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.  He enjoyed going to church, fishing, scuba diving, trained cutting horses, winning World in 1964, and making people laugh with his quick witted sense of humor.  He was a member of the Gideon’s International.
He was preceded in death by his parents; John and Blanche (Praytor) Wray.

Robert Ray Davis

Robert Ray Davis, Sr., 80, resident of Benton, passed away Saturday, April 14. He was born May 22, 1931 in Bauxite to the late Claude Davis and the late Bertha Viola Gould Davis Rapier. Mr. Davis served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict.  He later retired as mining supervisor at Alcoa.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marilyn Gail Shelton and Claudia Gould Walker, and a niece, Dana Shelton. 

Raymond J. Smith

Raymond J. Smith, 80, of Benton passed away Saturday, April 14, in Bryant.  He was born March 30, 1932 in New York City, New York to the late Raymond Smith and Mary Costigan Smith.  He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War.   Later he retired as a mechanical engineer for AT&T. 

Mrs. Annie Chilton

Mrs. Annie Chilton, 91, of Benton, went to be with the Lord on Sunday April 15. She was born March 30, 1921 in Pilot Mountain, North Carolina. Annie worked for 10 years at Dale’s Donuts and was owner of DeAnns Sandwich Shop and Papalo’s Pizza from 1961 – 1972. Annie was a Methodist. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years Dean Chilton, mother Estelle Jones and step-father, Joseph W. Jones, father, Luther Solomon Welch, two sisters, Alice Lipsulept and Mary Elizabeth Welch and daughter, Elizabeth Francile Melton.

Thomas E. Smith Jr.

Thomas E. Smith Jr., 82, of Benton passed away Wednesday, April 11. He was born Sept. 4, 1929, in North Little Rock to the late Thomas E. Smith Sr. and Ruby Valentine Smith. 
Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. The Saline Courier published several stories honoring Smith's service to his country. He was a certified registered nurse anesthetist and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Smith; a sister, Betty Brewer; and a stepson, Hollis Van Hopkins.

Linda Carol Berry Dempsey

Linda Carol Berry Dempsey, 71 of Benton passed away on April 9, with her granddaughter, Halana by her side. She was born on April 1, 1941 to the late, Virgil and Georgia McCutcheon in Benton. Linda was a member of New Life Missionary Baptist church for over 15 years. She enjoyed fishing, traveling, shopping, collecting and working in her flower garden. Linda retired from Benton Service Center after 27 years as a LPTN. Her most precious times were spent with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth Dempsey; one sister and one brother.

Elaine Banks

Elaine Banks, 64, of Benton went to be with the Lord on April 12, 2012 with her family by her side.
Mrs. Banks was a Christian and loved the Lord and her family with all her heart.
She was born on February 6, 1948 to the late, Dall and Phasteen Wilson in Benton.
Elaine fought a brave battle against surgery complications. She enjoyed shopping, fishing and working in her flower garden. Her most precious time was spent spoiling her grandbabies. Elaine never met a stranger and always was willing to help anyone in need.
