Benton PD kicks off city's academy; application deadline is Sept. 19

The Benton Police Department is accepting applications for the upcoming 12th annual Citizens Police Academy.

The academy will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and will include nine classes during an eight-week period.
The course is "designed to give participants a better understanding of police functions and responsibilities," said Lt. Kevin Russell, public information officer.

Topics will include criminal investigations, patrol functions, narcotics investigations, school resource officers, crime prevention, traffic stops, K-9 programs and shooting instruction.

Council to discuss hike in water, sewage rates

The Bauxite City Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, to discuss potentially raising the water and sewer rates as well as amending late charge rates for services.

The potential increase recommendation was prepared by Alderman Paula Matthews.

Currently, residential customers are charged $17 for the first 2,000 gallons of water and $8.50 per 1,000 gallons thereafter. Customers the sewer charges are $12 for the first 2,000 gallons and $5.15 per 1,000 gallons thereafter.

Bryant audit comes back clean

Saline County Prosecuting Attorney Ken Casady has determined that the city of Bryant did not violate any state statutes in regard to undocumented travel expenses.

Casady has been asked to look into this issue in conjunction with the findings from the city's 2012 legislative audit.

"The city and various vendors have provided documentation for purchases referenced in your report," Casady said in a letter to Roger Norman of the Division of Legislative Audit. "Unless further action is requested by the Division of Legislative Audit, my office considers this matter closed."
