Darrell W. Lavendusky

Darrell W. Lavendusky, 61, of Bauxite, passed away Jan. 20.He was born Oct. 11, 1950 in Henryetta, Okla., to Julius and Belva Lavendusky. Darrell was an employee of Coors Tech in Benton.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Julius Ray Lavendusky.
He is survived by his wife, Mary “Melinda” Lavendusky; two sons, Steve Lavendusky and wife Sarah of Alexander and John Lavendusky of Alexander; a daughter, Jennifer Hood and husband Paul of Bauxite; stepchildren, Melissa White of Benton andMark Orrell of Haskell; a sister, Linda Kay Dodson of Colorado; and eight grandchildren.

Christine Scott Bailey

Christine Scott Bailey, 78, of Hot Springs, died Thursday, Jan. 19. She was born on May 6, 1933, in Mt. Ida, the daughter of Jewell Jefferson Scott and Cora Margaret Warren Scott. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William E. Bailey; her sister, Patsy Jo Scott Graves; and her brother-in-law, Raymond Myers.
Christine was Assembly of God in her faith and a beloved mother, grandmother and sister who will be greatly missed.

Altha P. Mallory

Altha P. Mallory, beloved “Ma Ma,” went to be with the Lord on Jan. 18 at the beautiful age of 101. She was born on Oct. 9, 1910, in Crockett, Texas.
“Ma Ma” was preceded in death by two husbands, Robert Keene and Jim Mallory; a daughter, Effie Hulme; a great-grandson, Shane Tyer; and a special granddaughter-in-law, Doris Tyer.

Burton to end long career as Saline County clerk

Nearly 20 years ago, on Jan. 3, 1992, Freddy Burton announced his candidacy for Saline County clerk, a position held at that time by George Ramsey, who was not seeking another term.
Today, at age 64, Burton is making another kind of announcement: "I will not seek another term."
He noted that some people who are already aware of his decision have asked him why he's ending his political career.
"Honestly, I never thought I would stay 20 years," he said. "Someone else needs to have the privilege that I’ve had as county clerk."

McMahan takes aim at foe with postcard; Purifoy ready to fight back, starts recall

Some residents in Bauxite received more than bills and junk mail recently. A postcard from Bauxite Mayor Johnny McMahan was delivered last week to selected citizens.
On the front of the postcard was the arrest photo of Bauxite resident Debbi Purifoy. On the reverse side was a commentary from McMahan that starts begins, "Do you want the person on the front side of this card to be the 'face' of Bauxite? Not me."
The postcard also includes the names and telephone numbers of three city alderman with an encouragement from the mayor for residents to call and say "No to Purifoy."

Festival director defends actions

James Ballew, a Bryant resident and director of Family Fest, the annual Independence Day tradition that has attracted thousands of families and generated thousands of dollars for the city of Bryant in the 13 years since its inception, wants to set the record straight.
Ballew is referring to comments made by Bryant Alderman Danny Steele in a guest column that appeared in the Jan. 12 edition of The Saline Courier.

Dog shot in Bauxite by police; neighbors, police chief said it was warranted

A call of a vicious dog in Bauxite ended with the animal being shot, but a neighbor and the police chief say the death was warranted.

"It's very peaceful now," Melissa Parker said. "It's finally peaceful enough for my son to ride his bicycle outside without the fear of being bit. It's good for all of us."

Tonya Verser, 48, of Magnet Cove died Jan.17.  She was born June 24, 1963, in Malvern to Dean and Anita (Holiman) Nix.
She was a Malvern High School graduate and the medical staff coordinator at Hot Spring County Medical Center in Malvern.
She is survived by her husband, Tommy Verser; two sons, Josh and Zach Verser; her parents, Dean and Anita Nix; her sisters, Tammy Brown and husband Les, Kim Burton and husband Michael, and Kristi Jones and husband, Jeff. 
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Regency Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Magnet Cove Cemetery.

Dorothy Elizabeth Newcomb Counts, 93, a resident of the Collegeville community, died Monday, Jan.16.  She was born June 29, 1918 in Saline County to the late William and Cora Lee Wright Newcomb.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, William Con and Cora Lee Wright Newcomb; her husband, Frank Counts; her brothers, Lawrence Newcomb and wife Mildred of Collegeville, Frank Newcomb and wife Juanita of Scott; her sisters, Bea Gordon and husband Louie of California and Mary Leetha Newcomb of Scott. 

BAMM Board announces Wall of Fame inductees

Benton Athletic Memorial Museum Board of Directors is announcing the inductees for the 2012 Wall of Fame.
Donnie Burks, executive director of the museum, said the new inductees are Becky Fulcher, Emily Arnold Hinton and Jeff Freeman.
The three will be honored Feb. 25 at the annual Wall of Fame banquet to be held in the cafeteria of Benton High School.
Displays depicting accomplishments of the inductees will be set up in the museum, which will be open from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The banquet will start at 6 p.m.
