Fred L. Whitfield, 88, of Benton passed away June 24, 2014.
He was born April 16, 1926, in Dewitt to the late Henry and Mattie Brooks Whitfield.
Fred served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy Whitfield; his brothers, Doyle, Ray, Virgil, Derrel and Norris Whitfield; his sisters, Lucille Bryan, Bernice Crutchfield, Reba Jane Whitfield and Lyla Whitfield; and a son, Jeff Whitfield.

Heidi Cox, head softball coach at Benton High School, has been named 2014 Outstanding Softball Coach of the Year by the Arkansas High School Coaches Association.
Native of Texarkana, Cox took the helm at Benton in the fall of 2011 and has since taken her team to two 6A State Championship games (2013 and '14), winning her first title this past season with a 4-2 win over Sheridan.
