Common Sense: Solving the world's problems, one truck bed at a time

"What is your platform?" asked the beauty contest host of a pageant finalist. "I want to see world peace and an end to hunger around the world." came the response. With all due respect for beauty pageants, contestants or hosts, this particular venue is not the think tank that it appears. World problems are not solved at pageants.
They are solved around the beds of pickup trucks.

Would you eat a 9,983-calorie, 3-pound hamburger called a "Quadruple Bypass Burger?" It appears that many people would, and do. One person, in particular, is reported to have been a lover of the meal that packs more calories in one sitting than most people eat in a week. His name was John Alleman. Last week, Alleman suffered a heart attack as he waited at the bus stop in front of the Las Vegas location of the Heart Attack Grill, home of the Quadruple Bypass Burger.
Alleman was 52.

A recent column about Southern sayings apparently spoke to a lot of area residents.
For what it's worth, when you write a column like this — or any column at all — you wonder if anyone will read it. After that, you wonder if anyone will like it.
Through the years I've been surprised many times at readers' evaluations. I may not hear from anyone regarding something I sort of expected to stimulate a response, while something I just threw together in a big hurry without a lot of thought will generate a lot of comments.

If you want a really good look at the town of Benton, I suggest you go to the Big Red just off exit 114 and buy some gas. That’s what I did and I am telling you, the view is fantastic.
As I stood there filling the tank, I could see all the way up Interstate 30 into the city limits. The tops of the trees put down a carpet of green from one side of the horizon to the other. The steeple of the First United Methodist Church pointed skyward and right next to it, the Saline County Courthouse could be seen.

Common Sense: Humor can be found everywhere

Finding humor in situations that aren’t necessarily meant to induce laughter often times will bring forth heartfelt chuckles. This is not a task easily mastered. An individual must first possess a sense of humor slightly off center.
It is a skill that can be nurtured, but is most effective when it is gifted by heredity.
I do my best to hone this skill, but it is a work in progress. There have been several instances lately where practice has resulted in at least a giggle for me.
